We’ve been using Livefyre since March of this year which is about 6 months or so. As with all things it has its good points and bad points. However I’ve just learned in the past few days from MikeTheMarine that he is unable to comment at TRS because Livefyre is blocked by his company firewall. Up until that point I had no idea that Livefyre could be blocked by firewalls. My guess is that he’s not the only one.
Another problem I have with Livefyre is that when we ban people, Livefyre doesn’t really ban them. If they don’t know explicitly they’ve been banned, which has happened in the last few days, they will keep commenting and Livefyre hides their comments. It’s what I call torture mode. They still see their comments but nobody else does. And honestly I don’t think that’s fair. I wish it explicitly refused their comments when they are banned.
And I get other complaints from time to time about this or that…the jumpiness of Livefyre’s comment box because of live updates and so forth.
So here’s where I’m at. I see a lot of sites still using DISQUS like Twitchy, National Review, GretaWire, and many others. While I’ve had my issues with DISQUS in the past (their old system), I don’t think that their comment system is blocked behind firewalls. And their banning system is much better and more clear. And I’ve been told the new DISQUS has been improved since they forced the transition.
I really don’t like switching from one to the other and then back again and so forth. But it does bother me that people like MikeTheMarine can’t comment because Livefyre is blocked.
So for those of you who comment on different sites that have DISQUS, what do you think of the new DISQUS? Have you gotten used to it or do you just refuse to comment at the sites that use it? Do you think you could get used to it here?
UPDATED: As you can probably see we have switched back to DISQUS. I was very surprised at the overwhelming sentiment to switch back to it so I have gone ahead and made the change. No point in waiting around. At this time pre-DISQUS comments are waiting to be imported and should be done sometime today.
Thanks for all your input on this.
