Amazing People – Jason Schechterle

jason_schechterleI first heard about Jason watching The First 48 on A&E. It was his first case as a rookie detective, but seeing him on the show was obviously something that stirred my curiosity. On the show, as well as the video below, he speaks about having a wreck in 2001 caused by someone whose vehicle was going over 100mph because of an epileptic seizure. His body burned for over 50 seconds and he sustained 4th degree burns on his face and neck. He underwent an 8 hour surgery and was in a coma for close to 3 months. When he finally went home, his two year old son was afraid of him and refused to acknowledge that he was his father.

I simply cannot imagine having to cope with this magnitude of stress and difficulties . Here is an excerpt from a great article about his ordeal.

“I know what a lot of people think,” he says. “They look at my face and think, ‘Oh, I couldn’t live like that.’ I probably wouldn’t have wanted to be saved that night either had I been awake and conscious.

“But now,” he says, “I can still have my life, just like I had it before. I can still laugh. I can still talk. I’m still able to function with my kids. Those firefighters and doctors did me a huge favor. They gave me a chance to be something. And I’m still very proud of who I am.”

So, needless to say, it’s amazing that he even survived! But what I found even more amazing were the things he spoke about in the video below (and the article as well). His new take on life is inspiring and it gives me pause, thinking about how I view myself and other people, and how much potential there really is to overcome obstacles that I am faced with on a regular basis. And he will tell you in the video that he feels that he has the best life ever and wouldn’t trade it to be anyone else.
