Bloomberg must believe he’s God’s gift to New York because it’s obvious he has a god-complex. He now wants to ban public displays of tobacco products in retail stores in an ‘out of sight out of mind’ effort to keep people from smoking:

NBC NEWS – If New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gets his way, stores won’t be able to publicly display tobacco products and will have to keep cigarettes under the counter or behind curtains.

The legislation announced Monday is the latest public-health crackdown by the mayor, whose ban on super-sized sugary soft drinks was shot down by a judge last week.

The proposed law would “prohibit display of tobacco products” in most retail shops, Bloomberg said. “Such displays suggest smoking is a normal activity and invite young people to experiment with tobacco.”

He said it would be the first of its kind in the nation.

A second law would impose new rules to make it harder to sell smuggled cigarettes.

Couldn’t you first ban public display of your face?

  • PVG

    STEROIDAL NAPOLEON  COMPLEX……..

  • steprock

You know, I don’t like cigarettes, but I do know that tobacco has been an important part of America since day 1. Literally. The first settlers had small tobacco gardens, and it grew from there.
Quit being everyone’s conscious! I hope there’s a backlash against him, though I fear the GOP might get hit with it too. Wait. Maybe that’s a good thing. ;-)

    • steprock

And another thing! Smoking IS a normal activity! We don’t want to promote it to young people, and we know that abuse of cigarettes is bad for your health, but since when are we out to crucify smokers???

      • americalsgt

steprock I really liked the French Gitanes (Blue Box with a  Gypsy on the front) but they are gone now and it’s been 6 years since I smoked.  But come on, putting them behind curtains only makes you want to look behind the curtain.  Silly little man – please go away.

      • OneThinDime

Can he start with Obama and then the Holliweirdos?

      • lanahi

When government pays for health care, it thinks everything that undermines health is its providence.  Once you let in that kind of thinking, it doesn’t ever stop.

        • steprock

That is SO true and exactly what I’ve been saying to friends. You get free health care from the government, they get to control your health.
That’s so fundamental, it’s an invasion of your very personhood. Do liberals think? I know people are desperate, but that’s not the answer.

  • YoJoe

HE should be banned from NEW YORK!

    • OneThinDime

      The US please

  • americalsgt

Ok fine.  Then I get to ban idiots putting window air conditioners in their cars.

  • KenInIl

Bloomie want to educate the public on this and that. He ought to start in the NYC public schools with the 3 R’s — readin, writin’ and ‘rithmetic — so public school grads can be though of as literate instead of illiterate !!

    • OneThinDime

But if NYC kids learn to read, write and properly do math, however will Bloomers continue to control them?

    • deTocqueville1

KenInIl Exactly, crime has skyrocketed under his watch, homelessnes risen dramatically (all due of course to those filthy ritch corporate jet owners who land and take their limos to the nearest shelter for the night) and the city’s ecpnomic base other than banking eroded. Failed dictators always engage in diversion.

  • Las1

    Pfft!
    Bloomberg’s a piker.
Go into any convenience store in Ontario.  What do you first see?  A dumb gray wall of tiny lockers with even tinier little labels so the poor clerk can at least find by name a cigarette pack with a deflated dead lung on the packaging to sell to the degenerate and politically incorrect smoker willing to put his good money down on a cancer inducing produce.  At least that’s the message our political dictators want us to have.

I’m not a smoker, but I’ll stand for smokers’ rights any time.
These statists are all the bleepin’ same.

    • steprock

I’m with you there, man. I don’t smoke and don’t like cigarettes, but people have rights. You either stick up for each other or the thing YOU like is next.

    • OneThinDime

Thankfully I didn’t have a food or liquid in my mouth when I misread your post’s 2nd line……

      • Las1

All I can say is…. just don’t send the sainted Michael over the New York border to Ontario.  It’ll give him more ideas with which to try your pour souls even further.
But in all fairness to Ontario… not even here do we have one individual so blighted with the nanny gene like that little piece of work you’ve got reigning there in New York City.

        • OneThinDime

NYC gets exactly what they deserve for voting the twit in for another term.  I hope the Big Gulpers and the smokers are loving their election consequences.

  • stage9

For God’s sake can’t we just ban people and be done with it all!

    • Las1

      Patience my good man… patience!

Of course you do realize which “people” will be first on their list don’t you?  You can start the list without me.   I’ll be back later to add any you may have left out.

  • Laurel A

Bloomberg is the little dictator that could.

  • billma40

    http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/cigarette.pdf
    State tax on cigarettes.
At bottom you will see that NYC adds an additional  $1.50  per pack.
Why would Nanny want to lose that tax revenue?

    • OneThinDime

You beat me to it!  Wonder if he will move the tax to the store owners purchase instead of end sale so he gets 100% of the tax

      • toongoon

        OneThinDime
The amount of greed among our elitists is unprecedented in this country.

    • toongoon

      billma40
That’s minor. As long as there is still somebody with money, they’ll get it one way or another.

    • BetseyRoss

Because math is hard and he doesn’t realize that the tax revenue will be killed.  Totally oblivious to over-reaching and consequences.  He’s the Nanny of NYC you know.

  • deTocqueville1

This guy is completely out of control and can’t go soon enough. The self absorbed arrogance is just amazing.

    • Las1

      deTocqueville1
Mayor Ed Koch, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Mayor Rudi Giuliani
One of these things is not like the other.

      • deTocqueville1

        Las1 deTocqueville1 Precisely. Nice juxtaposition!

    • PatrickHenrysBody

deTocqueville1 In regards to Nanny Bloomberg, his arrogance and self-absorption reminds me of this classic movie line:

      • Las1

Oh that was a great movie!  I love them classics… James Cagney.

        • PatrickHenrysBody

Las1 It is one of Cagney’s better classics. Yankee Doodle Dandy is another one. I also like Angels with Dirty Faces. Okay, so almost any movie with Cagney in it is a must-watch. ;-)

      • deTocqueville1

        PatrickHenrysBody deTocqueville1 YES!

    • PatrickHenrysBody

deTocqueville1 He is insane…like most of his ideological bent are.

  • EdHerold

We need to spare a square with all the crap this man is spewing !

  • 12grace

Time for all New Yorkers to leave New York and let bloomberg and all the other leeches stew in their own juices.

    • OneThinDime

We don’t need the pollution that voted for this commie troll to yuck up red states, I say let’s gate them in and let them eat each other and only permit the Conservative Americans to leave

  • ChrisOnARoll

Nanny B is the 12th or 13th richest person in the world. But he knows he’s no better than the rest of us. What to do?  Control us, since is makes him feel better!
    End of story.

    • OneThinDime

Really, why isn’t he paying his fair share of taxes, like 90%?

  • Stehekin912

It occurs to me that illegal drug products are not on display in stores, but many people still manage to find out about them and abuse them…so the logic does not track.

    • PatrickHenrysBody

Stehekin912 Logic is not a job prerequisite for leftist authoritarians like Bloomberg.

      • Stehekin912

Good point!  We should not clutter up the agenda with a logical argument hee hee!

        • PatrickHenrysBody

          Stehekin912 :-)

What is it they say about socialist “lawmakers”? (and I used that term very loosely)…
Legislating Unworkable Solutions for Nonexistent Problems Since 1918.

Hey Bloomy, communism like you push kills more than smoking, drinking, corn-syrup. It is controlling other people that is the real danger, and you Bloomy are the leader in NY. Can you explain why is it that you, Bloomy, believe you are some much smarter than everyone else and know whats better for them?
Bloomy, the problem is you, and people like you, you attempt to socialize control over people, than you feel that under these rules you put in place that gives you reason to impose more rules due to your socialized policies.

Bloomy you need to realize something, you do not believe in freedom, all your actions and language speak loudly for you. You are a communist in the true sense, you believe you are of the ruling class in a society of no classes.
The problems you are trying to fix stares you in the face every time you look in the mirror, thats right Bloomy, you are the problem! You and everyone else that attempts to control other peoples action by your standards.
It is a mental illness, and it has killed more people than any other plague brought upon man, and you Bloomy are infected to your core with it!

  • Bunjy

Does this guy actually, you know, govern?  Is there no crime in NY requiring his attention?  How about infrastructure?  Or, tax medallion requests?  Liquor licenses?  He has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on his hands, the meddlesome micro-man.

    • Las1

I was just grappling with that very simple and apt question a few days ago myself.
Geeze… are there not more important and pressing issues in NYC?  I guess not!  I knew Ed Koch and his successor cleaned up the place really well… I just never knew that they did such a good job of it. Bloomberg was left with nothing else do do buy bug the sheit out of people.

      • OneThinDime

He ignores crime in his city because the peeps don’t matter, sooner they die the sooner he can lay claim to their bank accounts.

    • PhillyCon

Bunjy As I said upthread, Bloomberg could not effectively manage hurricane sandy relief.  He was forced into canceling the New York marathon and could not see why it created a problem to continue with it.

      • Bunjy

PhillyCon Bunjy Good point.  The guy is incapable of being a mayor.  All he is good for is acting like a nosy old busybody.

  • davienne

whatta power hungry little troll… those NYers  need to ban him from banning things… a mayor does not have the power that he thinks he has…

  • Tickedwhiteman

    little nanny weasel

  • njmom

The mayor needs a real job because he has too much time on his hands. Perhaps, he should concentrate on crime rather than being the babysitter of New Yorkers.

  • toongoon

At least he only has to get rid of the pictures of tobacco products, seeing as only 20% of the 50% of those who make it to graduation would be able to read any public displays.
Remember when politicians used to care about literacy rates? At least now the ignorant will be healthy.

    • OneThinDime

The way this country is going with illegals is why pictures are required on signs!

  • PrinceofPeace

He’ll miss those tax revenues if everyone quits smoking.

    • toongoon

      PrinceofPeace
I think he’s going to regret these decisions when people really start smoking!

    • OneThinDime

I just read an article that said he was considered for VP by both Obama and Romney? WTH is up with that?

      • stage9

OneThinDime What is up with that is they’re BOTH liberals.

        • OneThinDime

I never heard Romney was considering Bloomers but yes I agree Romney and Paul Ryan are much closer to the Dems than to Consevatives

        • harglide

          OneThinDime THAT IS FLIPPINSCARY!
What is there to back that claim? Just wonderin, because I like/liked ryan…………I think all of the G-O, FLIPPIN-P Needs a dang change! Ryan is new though. Is he really that bad?

  • OneThinDime

Bloomers is out in November!  How many more bans is he going for before then?  And this idiot used to be a Republican?  Well that explains why the GOP is dead.

    • clevonlittle

OneThinDime unfortunately so was Hillary Clinton , Martin Luther King Jr. , Theodore Roosevelt , and Spiro Agnew . Don’t post an obit too early , the GOP has weathered storms before .

      • OneThinDime

Hillary Clinton was a Republican when?  John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio (that young pup) all have come out in favor of amnesty and citizenship for tens of millions of illegal aliens, many of whom have been found to be illegally voting to. The GOP is dead.

    • stage9

OneThinDime He used to be everything. A Democrat. A Republican. And I think he’s now an Independent.
He doesn’t know WHAT THE HECK he is.
      Of course I do.

Canada does this. You can walk into any Canadian store that sells Cigarettes and they are behind a Curtain. Not just any Curtain. It is an Actual Thick Curtain made out of the stuff that the Dentist uses to protect you during X Rays. Almost exactly like it, if not the same exact thing.
Also for instance, Cigarettes in Canada cannot be sold where Prescription drugs are sold. Also for instance Save On Foods, because they sell prescriptions over the counter, and by prescription, the Cigarettes are sold in a Separate area of the Store, attached on of course, but in a Different Entrance. The whole thing is covered in the plastic Bullet Proof Glass (not Because of Crime) and in Metal Cabinets the Cigarettes are kept.
I laugh so hard at this. Why ? OUT IN FRONT OF THE WORLD for the KIDS To see are the PORN MAGAZINES. So Canadians pay a Hefty Tax on ‘Cigarettes, which are Legal, but on PORN they pay no Federal Tax, which are legal, but the Kids can pick up the magazines and see and Read to their Hearts content.
Now Bloomberg Wants to do what Canada Does, and it has made no difference. He has Severe Issues Mentally. First off NEW YORK City KIDS cannot Read and the Schools are Failing. He also has done nothing about that at all. He did nothing to secure his city against a Hurricane, he is to wrapped up in Pop, Salt and Fat in your food. Now he is going to Lock up the Cigarettes, But LEAVE THE PORN out in front for all the Kids to see and Read. I am all for freedom of Choice, and I don’t care if you do or you don’t smoke. It is UP TO YOU.
This is a slippery slope this man is on, and People in New York love this guy, they disgust me and that is why I will, not go to that city or that state. Cigarettes are a Legal Product, they won’t make it Illegal because of that Federal and State Tax Stamp. Less people are smoking and that is why they keep raising the taxes on them. But what are you going to do when the taxes are raised, more quit, and they have to keep having that money. THEY ARE GOING TO TAX YOU on something else. HMMM GAS was one of the items, what is next?
If he is for taking away FREEDOM from people having the ability to chose, THEN I SAY LOCK UP THE PORN MAGAZINES, put them behind a Curtain. How far would he get with that one? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
Bloomberg is out in November, but watch who they elect. These Liberals are sick destructive people.

  • http://www.navalwarfare.blogspot.com/ Libertyship46

This guy is going nuts! He never met a law he didn’t like, especially if it restricts freedom of any kind. I’m still puzzled, though. He doesn’t like sodas, but you can still drink as much of them as you want. He hates cigarettes, yet you can still smoke them until you get lung cancer. He doesn’t like alcohol too, but you can drink until you pass out and die. Seems like every time he tries to outlaw something for your own good, in the final analysis it is still up to you to determine what is really in your own best interest and to know when to stop. Government can make all the laws it wants, but people still will do what they want to do.

Many staunch Conservatives live in Long Island and Upstate New York . The problem is that the vast majority of people in the cities ALL vote for liberal idiots.

      • froggy19510

12grace froggy19510 Good point. I am sure that you talk to your liberal freinds and try to help them see the truth. But do you talk to your less than active conservitave friends and get them motivated?

        • 12grace

          froggy19510 12grace
There are a pocket- full of Conservatives in NYC trying to fight the leftist machine and it is an up hill battle. But, it seems now that the taxes have gone sky high; many hospitals have closed ( die to the illegals invasion), the crime rate is staggering and food, gas, heating and housing prices are suffocatingly impossible, they are re-thinking their party allegience.

The working people are becoming less and less enchanted with the D party and the liberal mind-set but the groups getting the goodies (mostly minorities) seem to be led by their greed, feelings of entitlement, and their core racist attitudes that compel them to embrace being “professional victims” with huge chips on their shoulders. They vote D no matter what happens and they are case studies of “Useful idiot” syndrome.
Please pray for New York and all of America that their eyes would be open and they would turn from the wickedness of the leftist propaganda. G-d help us!

  • http://www.therightscoop.com MadJack

Yes, MJ, it is maddening. Most people in NYC, when given facts about the issues cannot intelligently debate the issues so they resort to name calling or violence. I find it nearly impossible to be friends with liberals as their denial or stupidity makes every freedom-loving New Yorker suffer. And too, there are far reaching country-wide ramifications of liberal New York voters, as well.
If you don’t mind me asking, where do you live? I want to relocate.

  • DawgfanInFL

I imagine Bloomberg’s minions, running around New York to enforce all these bans and bringing him back armloads of black market baby formula, buckets of popcorn, and improperly displayed cigarettes…the list goes on. Sounds like a way for “King John” to fill is coffers.

Limits and bans on soda, on cigarettes, on salt, on trans fats … They say it’s to promote health, or even to reduce healthcare costs, since we’ll soon be paying for everybody else’s healthcare.
But you will never see a limit or a ban by these people on promiscuous sexual activities or bath houses, etc. STDs, cervical cancer, a whole bunch of male gay diseases I don’t want talk about … these all cost a lot of money to take care of, and they shorten life more than sugar does, but Bloomberg will never limit this sort of behavior.

Bloomberg has lost his mind, but New Yorkers elected this clown and get the government they deserve…just like in my state (California).

He said “Such displays suggest smoking is a normal activity and invite young people to experiment with tobacco.” while last night on O’Rielly, Watters interviewed high school kids partying at the St. Paddy’s day parade and the kid said “Yeah I’m smoking weed, Obama smoked weed and he’s president so it can’t be that bad” ! Maybe Bloomberg should start with Obama and stop worrying about tobacco.

“A second law would impose new rules to make it harder to sell smuggled cigarettes.”
What? you mean all the liberal, geriatric, New Yorkers vacationing down here in Florida at the moment, won’t be able to go home with the trunks of their cars packed with cartons of cigarettes to sell to their friend’s kids, anymore?
Oh, perish the thought. ;-) ;-)
