UPDATE: MORE ON TRUMP CALL — Trump called Erdogan to CONGRATULATE HIM

It’s being reported now that Trump has called Erdogan to congratulate him on his victory in yesterday’s referendum:

DAILY SABAH – U.S. President Donald trump called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday to congratulate him on the referendum victory.

I couldn’t believe it, so I had to look further and found that Haaretz is reporting it too:

HAARETZ – U.S. President Donald Trump called his Turkish counterpart to congratulate him on the results of a referendum that will grant the Turkish leader sweeping new powers, presidential sources in Ankara said on Monday evening.

And here from Reuters:

U.S. President Donald Trump called Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan to congratulate him on winning a referendum expanding his authority, sources in Erdogan’s palace said on Monday.

Assuming this is all true, how blindingly stupid it is for the leader of the free world to call a megalomaniac like Erdogan and give him his blessing for winning a referendum that not only creates one-man rule, but is in the context of major crackdowns by Erdogan to silence any opposition voices, whether they are in the media, the government, and yes, even the judiciary.

And not to miss the elephant in the room, but there are serious questions about Erdogan cheating to win this referendum.

Who in the White House thought it would be a good idea for the leader of the free world to call a brutal dictator and give him his blessing?

I seriously hope this report…

Even the Turkish Anadolu Agency (which is like Reuters in Turkey) is reporting it:

U.S. President Donald Trump Monday congratulated his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call for the Yes win in the weekend referendum.

According to Turkish presidential sources, Trump telephoned Erdogan to laud Sunday’s historic victory.

A written statement on the interview is expected to be issued soon, the sources added.

The State Department just released a statement on the Turkish referendum. There are no ‘congratulations’ in it (click to enlarge):
