CNN has an article out that suggests Kelly was wrong in his ’empty barrel’ comments about Congresswoman Wilson back in 2015.
First, here’s Kelly’s comments from yesterday:
“A congresswoman stood up, and in the long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise, stood up there and all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building, and how she took care of her constituents because she got the money,” Kelly said Thursday. He did not mention Wilson by name at any point during his remarks. “And she sat down, and we were stunned. Stunned that she had done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned,” Kelly added.
And here’s the video of Wilson from back in 2015:
So yes, Kelly did get some of the details wrong. She wasn’t talking about funding, but rather she was the naming of the building.
But I think his main point was still clear, that she was tooting her own horn to make sure everyone knew just how hard she worked to ensure the naming of this FBI office happened. She was praising herself at a dedication event for two fallen soldiers and that’s what Kelly found offensive.
The White House responded this way:
