Contrary to Media Narrative, Obama Failures May Depress Hispanic Voter Turnout

As we approach the 2012 election date, the media will spin facts and headlines furiously in order to protect their anointed one, Barack Obama. One of these has been that the GOP rhetoric on immigration is so enraging Hispanics, that they will turn out in droves to support the Democrats.

Media narratives have a way of being founded more on wish rather than on fact.

From the Modesto Bee:

As the fastest-growing population group in the United States over the past decade, Latinos seemed poised to have a huge impact on the 2012 presidential and congressional campaigns.

Why then, political experts and demographers wondered, had the number of Latino voters declined significantly from 2009 to 2010? According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, the number of Hispanic registered voters fell from 11.6 million in 2008 — a presidential election year — to 10.9 million in 2010, when congressional races led the ballot in many states.

So voter registration dropped from 2008 to 2010 among Hispanics by 700,000 voters, which represents fully 6% of the voting bloc. If this rate continues onto 2012, Hispanic registration would have dropped by nearly 1.5 million voters, 12% of the voting bloc, and representing 3% of the total votes cast in 2012. That’s a significant decrease.

Even in California, my beloved homestate that is solidly in the grip of the socialist left, Hispanics shot up to 36.7% of the population, and yet the number of Hispanic voters dropped 9% from 2008 to 2010.

To the other prong of the narrative being spun by the media, I present the poll of Hispanic political attitudes by the Pew Research Center. They find that by a ratio of two to one, Latinos disapprove greatly with how Obama is dealing with illegal immigrants (59% versus 27%). Obama’s general approval rating among Hispanics has dropped from 58% in 2010 to 49%, only slightly above the rating in the general population.

Underlying all of this is the implication that American Hispanics only care about immigration – this is told over and over, but always implied, never corroborated with research. Whether the media knows they’re willingly misleading America, I cannot say, but the facts are available to anyone willing to look for them.

When asked about which issues are important to them, half of Latino registered voters place jobs and education among the highest topics, next in importance is Healthcare (45%), and even taxes and the Federal budget deficit place slightly above Immigration, at 34%, and 33% respectively. Where is the media narrative that Hispanics care more about taxes than immigration?

Among Latino registered voters, 35% describe their political views as conservative, 32% describe them as moderate and 28% describe their political views as liberal.

Now, it’s true that Hispanics have voted for Democrats in much greater numbers than for Republicans. But the picture I’m painting for you is in stark contrast to the one you’ll be hearing from the leftist Media, in their quest to encourage more Hispanics to vote for Obama.

This is not the first time this has happened, and you don’t even have to change candidates to prove it. In 2008, the media narrative was that there were great throngs of young people running to the polls to support Obama, and that it was a historical turnout. In point of fact, none of that was true.

It was called a “huge watershed” and “very extraordinary” very soon after the elections, as if Obama’s extraordinary popularity had completely changed politics. And while it’s true that he carried the youth vote far beyond what McCain was able to garner, the percentage of the electorate composed of young people had remained unchanged from 2004 to 2008, at about 18%. While more young people showed up at the polls, all age groups showed up in increasing numbers, so they had no more effect in 2008 than in 2004. Further, there was a gain of 1.6% from 2000 to 2004, when George W. Bush was elected – ever heard the narrative that Dubya inspired the youth to vote more?

So why push the Obama youth vote narrative?

In the worldview of the Left, the youth are gods, and nothing legitimizes you more than the approval from irresponsible, badly educated, inexperienced young people who think through their erogenous zones rather than with their brains. Witness the Occupy movement.  And when the facts aren’t there to support the worldview, they spin wildly to make reality fit.

They succeeded with African-Americans, they’ve tried the same tactic with the young, and they’re targeting Hispanics next.

Get ready for the spin, and arm yourself with the facts to combat it. Like Andrew Breitbart taught us, the first enemy is the media…
