Denny’s owner to raise prices to help pay for Obamacare

The real world consequences of terrible legislation:

FOX NEWS – A Florida restaurateur who operates roughly 40 Denny’s locations and five Hurricane Grill & Wings franchises throughout the state intends to add a 5 percent surcharge to customers’ bills to offset costs from ObamaCare beginning in January 2014 when the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented.

“People are trying to find ways to avoid the penalties and to avoid having to pay for ObamaCare,” John Metz told “Everyone’s looking for a way to not have to provide insurance for their employees. It’s essentially a huge tax on all us business people.”

To further offset the costs, Metz, who oversees roughly 1,200 employees as president and CEO of RREMC Restaurants, LLC, said he also will slash most of the staff’s time to fewer than 30 hours per week. That change will be announced to employees next month, he said.

“I want to explain it to everybody, to let them know what’s coming down the pike,” he said. “We like to keep our employees informed.”

The changes will force some front-of-the-house employees to look for second jobs, Metz said, but he simply cannot afford the penalties associated with ObamaCare.

“It’s a great concept,” he said. “We want to have everyone insured. The problem is, who is going to pay for it and how are we going to accomplish this?”

Keeping in mind the theme behind the Movie 2016, Obama is accomplishing exactly what he set out to accomplish, the complete economic destruction of ‘imperialist’ America.

  • colliemum

A surcharge so that customers have to pay for Obamacare, even tough they’re having to ay for their own as well?
Now that’s a great business plan – if you want to drive your business into the ground …

    • Voted for obama, did ya’ Well don’t say that those on my side of the isle didn’t try to warn you!

      • colliemum

        Hi Cliff –
you’re new to scoop, else you’d know that I’m not a citizen of the USA, and thus had no chance of voting against Obama.
        Find another target …

        • Patriot077

Pity Cliff is too uninformed to understand that your comment in no way reflected approval of Zero’s healthscare program or his other economic disaster plans – citizen or otherwise. Quite the opposite, in fact. 🙂

      • kong1967

Lol, he doesn’t like Obama any more than you do.

    • bobbybstrd

And where, pray tell, do you expect the money to come from?

      • colliemum

No use asking me – ask those who think Obamacare is the best thing since sliced bread.

        • WordsFailMe

Collie Mum – I also love to use irony to make a point, but I’ve found that,l often, you have to leave a really BIG clue that you tongue has been cheeked.

Can you believe how many new patriots are getting onto RS? What a great day!

          • colliemum

You’re right, WFM, and it’s also the case that I’m a bit uptight because of what is happening in Israel.

But yep, it is great that so many patriots are finding their way here!

            • WordsFailMe

I’m praying for a complete Israeli victory. Seems to me that if there were no more Palestinians, the issue would be moot. Worked once, why not again?

        • Jay

      • Patriot077

Everyone on this board knows that it will come at the expense of everyone but the elitists at the top. The same goes for the quality of the “care” provided.

    • FutureOnePercent

So survival is the business plan, and that drives business into the ground.

I’m glad you’re finally starting to understand simple economics and Obamacare.

      • Patriot077

Why is colliemum’s comment so misunderstood? She is only saying that a surcharge will cost every customer more when they also have to pay for their own “owebamacare” and that Denny’s can likely expect to lose business. She isn’t endorsing 0-care at all.

Survival tactics in and of themselves don’t drive business into the ground unless the customer can no longer afford to consume the product they are selling for the price being placed upon it.

        • redheadgrl

Gotcha. So, I will be paying more for my own Obamacare, plus all the surcharges that are levied against the customers to pay for others’ Obamacare. What folks don’t realize is that the only companies we’re hearing this from are the publicly traded ones – they have to disclose to the shareholders possible hindrances to business growth. What are we NOT hearing about are surcharges/hiring practices of all the privately held companies out there. They do not have to disclose…..

    • kong1967

Yeah, it stacks. My employer has to pay an increased rate of 20% for a trucking company to pay for their Obamacare, plus they will have to pay for our own. The customer in the end pays for the connection all the way down to the beginning of the production of a product. Denny’s may be facing price increases on the food they buy in order to do the same for those supplier companies.

This is really going to suck. Inflation out the wazoo, and this doesn’t even account for the inflation we are going to see on our energy prices because Obama is going to squeeze them to death so he can push green energy.

We are in for some bad times these next few years…..and beyond.

      • colliemum

Sadly, I have to agree. Inflation is the WMD governments use against their own citizens, especially against the productive middle classes.

The worst hit will be the elderly on a fixed income who rely on the interest on their savings.

Watch out for the way government will manipulate inflation numbers. Here, they have a ‘basket’, and lo and behold, because e.g. iPads are getting cheaper, inflation is down! Food prices aren’t in this ‘basket’ – so if you’re a pensioner, you better start thinking about how to cook and eat iPads … /sarc

        • kong1967

Lol. It’s all in the numbers and lying to the people what’s in those numbers…or not. Additionally, all those people who are going to be cut to 30 hours a week are not going to be reflected in the unemployment rates. Companies will cut the hours and hire more people to make up the hours. Unemployment will go down, but it will be a fraudulent number. A nation of part time workers instead of full time.

          • redheadgrl

Right, Kong. The reason the part-time model is in place is because it works. Now, part time is considered less than 30 hours per week. I think before it was 36 or 38. So that is a loss of at least 10 hours per week, 40 hours each month, 480/yr. If a PTE makes an average of $10/hr, that’s $400 less per month, which can mean a choice between food or heat for that PTE. I guess the food stamp numbers will increase. Does that mean my FICA will go up now ?

            • kong1967

Who knows, but government is forcing more people onto food stamps and welfare, and they can’t blame a bad economy. It’s pretty bad when politicians are trying to put people out of work because it gives them more control and more voters.

The fallout from Obamacare (along with the squeeze that’s going to be tightened on coal and oil) is going to crush our economy. Time to dig out the popcorn and watch the fireworks. I won’t enjoy what happens to our nation, but I will love the he!! out of telling every freaking liberal that this is what they voted for.

        • redheadgrl

You’re right, colliemum. Food and energy, the two largest household expenses, are not included in the “basket” for inflation purposes.

    • WordsFailMe

Mrs WFM and I were speculating regarding whether or not the owner would show the “5% surcharge as a separate line item on the check/receipt:

      • Apparently not. Just one total surcharge but it would be nice to see the surcharge show up bluntly on those eggs, bacon, etc because those that manufacture those items will have to do the same thing. Picture every industry in America at every level doing likewise.

      • sjmom

The grocery store where I shop announced on Monday they are closing Jan. 11th. Lots of people out of work, many are union, and local shoppers now have one less place to go. I, for one, am not thrilled with the other two stores which are now my choice but will have to learn to like them. This will also put the entire shopping center in jeopardy as the grocery story is tha anchor.

It did not take long for the election to begin its dirty work in the private sector. God help us because He is the only Person who can save us.

        • Patriot077

A large chain grocery closed a store near me shortly after the election. The timing may be coincidental but the policies that brought them to this conclusion have been building for at least the past 4 years.

          • sjmom

Out of curiosity my store was a Super Fresh. What was yours?

            • Patriot077

Albertsons. I think it is only in the Western states but present in nearly every town.

              • sjmom

Thanks. I’m on the East Coast.

              • redheadgrl

Just your Albertsons are the whole chain? When I lived in Denver, I shopped there. Now I’m back in the south and shop at Kroger. Never understood why cashiers and shelf-stockers need a union…..

        • redheadgrl

Twinkies and Ding Dongs may be things of the past:

Hostess says it will close if strike doesn’t end tonight. Bye bye 18K jobs.

My question: Are unions REALLY good for the workers?

          • sjmom

To answer your question; unions are NOT good for workers. It was the unions and their benefit demands which destroyed GM. When I was in the grocery store talking to one of the people who work there I have gotten to know over the years she told me she is going to have a difficult time finding another job that will pay her what she makes now as well as the fact she now pays zero toward her benefits. Could this be what happened with the grocery chain?

I had heard about Hostess and I have said for awhile business would not stand still and allow Obama and his allies to reign their terror over them. Business is not going to go broke for them or anyone else. The owners will take their money and make profit somewhere else.

    • Actually that already happens in many places in the country. San Francisco has a much higher surcharge already on the restaurant tabs of every restaurant to pay for the healthcare in San Francisco.

    • FutureOnePercent

I misunderstood your intentions there collie, so I truly apologize. I’ve just been a bit testy since the elections and I no longer have any faith in human intelligence. If someone says something, I’m going to assume they’re an idiot before I assume it is sarcasm.

      • colliemum

Hey, futureonepercent – don’t worry, I understand totally where you’re coming from.

I’ve been a bit uptight all day because of what is going on in Israel, so I didn’t express myself with my (ahem) usual (ahem) clarity, and left out the /sarc as well, sorry!
It happens – after all, if we were all perfect, we’d need shedloads of headache pills because our haloes were pinching all the time!

        ((( ))) to you!

    • modette99

Ummmm what would you expect a Business owner to do? Lets say egg prices go way up, would you not expect him to raise the cost of the meals that contain eggs? This is business 101, cost are always passed onto consumers or that business owner will not be in business for too long. At least he is showing a surcharge he could of just raised the prices of all dishes by 5%….LOL

  • I wonder how many Denny’s employee’s voted for Obama or didn’t vote? Elections have consequences.

    • kong1967

I would love to be a fly on the wall during that meeting where they are told their hours are going to be cut. Most of the employees probably voted for Obama. I feel sorry for the conservatives, but the liberals deserve this.

    • I would be willing to bet quite a few.

    • WordsFailMe

Cuantos empleados de Denny’s ha votado por Senor Obamarhoid? Problemente todos!

    • sjmom

To say nothing of those who frequent the place. Probably many.

  • Rshill7

You won’t have to worry about that in Florida friend. Obamacare can be killed by the Governors. We have 30 of them now, and they may very well do precisely that. Several have already said as much. More will follow.

Here’s a Tea Party person explaining it quite well:

Take heart. “We’ve got all the cards…just need to play them right.”

    • Haywoodjbl

      Very Interesting read….

    • sjmom

Do I need to move to Florida?

    • sjmom

Thanks, I read it and printed to show others. Unfortunately, NJ wasn’t mentioned. 🙁

      About who??????

  • jrt1031

businesses like this will have to shut down in the next four years because no one will be able to rationalize eating out when they can barely afford to buy food and eat in.

    • poljunkie

One bag of groceries here now, is on average $ 50.00. (paper)

    • WordsFailMe

Couple that with the fact that the working people will need 2 jobs or more to earn what they are earning now leaving them a lot less free time.

  • poljunkie

I guess the “Grand Slam” breakfast will be 9.99 then. I have no idea how much it is now really- we dont have a Dennys near by.

On another note- Highest number of new jobless claims, this “week” — OH, PA…my goodness..that’s….. Unprecedented!!!

  • kong1967

I had a lib come up to me last night at work, without saying anything else, and ask “wouldn’t you be willing to pay an extra 14 cents for you pizza for Obamacare? I laughed and asked “are you kidding me?”. I told him the bill is a disaster and he’s going to find out the hard way. Then he said he wants to move to Canada so he can get healthcare for free. I asked him who told him that it was free. It’s not free. You pay for it out of your taxes and it’s a terrible system.

This is how libs force bad bills down our throats. Deception. They sell you a sh** sandwich and tell you it’s chocolate pie……and so many people believe them. Nothing the libs tell us about their bills is true…ever. Best con artists in the game. Well, they aren’t so good at it, but people are so stupid they believe anything their sugar daddy liberal politicians tell them.

    • Linky1

Canadian healthcare is free, huh? As a Canadian, I can tell you that it ain’t free. My premiums (yes, I do pay them) just went up to cover the ever-escalating healthcare costs.

But I am not surprised – these stupid liberals figure that anything is free as long as it’s paid with someone else’s money. Yup, Liberalism sure is a mental illness, not covered under “free” healthcare in any country.

      • WordsFailMe

        Great point Linky!

      • colliemum

Heh. Greetings from the UK, where the NHS is ‘free’ because we all pay for it through taxation … except of course for the foreign laydees, who arrive here by plane, in order to give birth to their babies.

        • Linky1

Same thing here in Canada, along with refugees getting “free” healthcare (better than what we get), while we great unwashed have to queue up for services.

      • kong1967

Yep…ignorance is bliss, and we have to live with the decisions of other people’s ignorance.

  • Sandra123456

I know it is hard for liberals to understand but businesses are not established to give people jobs, or provide health care, or be social welfare agencies, or be politically correct.
People establish businesses to make MONEY! period.

I would like every business to list on their bills/invoices that $x.xx is an Obamacare surcharge.

Guess Obamacare will end the 40 hour workweek for many.

    • sjmom

Obamacare will end the workweek for many. Period. My local grocery store just announced it is closing.

  • maynardb50

It will not be just a Denny’s in Florida that is going to do this. The taxes coming down the pike will affect ALL industries, not just food establishments. Those knuckleheads that voted for the demorats will very soon feel the consequences of their action, as we who did not. All of us will be hurt by this socialism experiment.

  • Well, a small majority of Americans re-elected Obama, so now they can experience the pain of that decision. Let them see, as we do, that there are consequences for their decision to re-elect this fraud. By 2016, those same Obama fanatics may have a different view of what our government should be doing, especially when they are broke, unemployed, hungry, and cannot afford their mortgage, gas, and food. Hope they’re happy!

  • We need to stress to the electorate that the whole Democratic party is and will be totally responsible. For the future job losses, and work hour restrictions that the Affordable Care Act has imposed on the American people. This monstrosity of a tax-hike as expressed by the Supreme Court in its passage. Was passed overwhelmingly by the Democratically control houses of both the Harry Reid-Senate and Nancy Pelosi-Congress, and they must take the blame on what most definitely will be… A Fiscal Cliff.

  • Terrenceor

The Republicans keep campaigning against Obama like he is going to run again. Meanwhile the Senate Democrats get no criticism and they are the ones up for election in 2014!!!! Everything bad that Obama is responsible for needs to be tied to the Democrat Senators up for re-election.

Go Alinsky on the Democratic Senators and watch the rats flee from Obama. Obamacare, Benghazi, employment, debt etc. it needs to be tied to the Dems.

People are emotionally tied to Obama like they were to Clinton. They are not tied to senators.

    • My sentiments exactly! We need to tie the coming insurrection totally on the Democratic party and their failed policies. That is the message that has to and must be sent to the people.

  • Sober_Thinking

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

What’s funny is that Occupiers and moochers and liberal twits will boycott any company that openly states how they will combat their rising costs… and by boycotting them, it causes further price raises and ultimately less income for the moochers and parasites.

    • sjmom

I know you and your wife are Christians so I am going to ask that you join me in praying our God will Divinely intervene in the affairs of our country and bring forth an Awakening; to arouse the Church from its slumber as well as bring Revival throughout our land. The Lord is the ONLY one who can save our nation and we must seek His face now more than ever.

      Thank you.

      • Sober_Thinking

You are spot on… I’ve been doing that already but will renew my commitment to continue to do so. You’re right, man (and woman) has screwed things up too much… only God can fix this. I pray that He continues to be merciful.

  • Conservator1

Why is Metz, president and CEO of RREMC Restaurants, LLC, slashing most of his staff’s time to fewer than 30 hours per week?

Because ObamaCare redefines what a full-time employee is; prior to healthcare reform, a full-time employee was a person who worked 40 or more hours per week. Under ObamaCare, a full-time employee is anyone who works 30 hours per weak. This is going to destroy the restaurant industry and many others as well.

  • odin147

I hate to say this but pain is what we will have to go through to get conservatism back. Pain is the only way I see liberals learning a lesson, but it is necessary that the gop not moderate liberal policy, just vote present and let the policy work it’s course. It will be painful and sometimes I think it may not be worth it.

  • odin147

  • I’ve embraced my inner sadist (she made an appearance on November 7, 2012, and has been a squatter ever since!) and I’ve decided that I am glad — nay, GIDDY — for all these layoffs, surcharges, etc…

Far too many Americans apparently don’t understand what it means to surrender their liberty to government – they have NO IDEA what they’ve done.

Maybe, MAYBE, they’ll now find out. And it will HURT. It will hurt BADLY. And I want them to hurt.

And I realize that a lot of wonderful patriots will be hurt as well. This is a sad, but unavoidable, consequence of the election.

The Progs (and the morons) want this – and I say GIVE IT to them! Not just a nibble or a taste. Make them gorge themselves on the whole friggin’ buffet until they get sick.

I thought 9/11 was a wake-up call to America. Obviously not.
I thought Obama’s abysmal record was a wake-up call to America. Obviously not.
I thought the threat to our children and grandchildren – the massive debt and spending they’re getting saddle with – was a wake-up call to America. Obviously not.
I thought the fires that raged in the Middle East and Northern Africa (and then Benghazi) was a wake-up call to America. Obviously not.

So, eat. EAT!!! Stuff yourselves like pigs, Progs. The trough is ALL YOURS.

    • RosiesSeeingRed

Carmen, that’s exactly where I am right now (and have been since Nov. 7th as well). You articulated it much better than I ever could, but I just had this exact conversation with a Russian friend of mine who is sick over this election. He worships Reagan for bringing down the wall in his former Soviet Union country in which he was raised. He left in 1989 with $300 in his pocket and never spent a moment on government aid. He learned our language, embraced capitalism, made a good life for himself, and LOVES THIS COUNTRY. He became a citizen 12 years ago and knows far more about our history than the average liberal-voting moron.

As a person who grew up in an oppressive communist country, he knows what’s coming down the pike and his reaction is to try to save it. I say, let it happen, and the sooner, the better. We will never reach the morons otherwise. Only THEIR OWN suffering will wake them up. We will be OK because we know it’s coming and we’re prepared. The morons do not, but the sooner they find out, the better for all of us.

  • sjmom

Just the beginning of a very long four years. Right before the election my husband said if Obama wins companies would do what we are now seeing; cut back hours under 30 in order to avoid Obamacare. The American people have now begun to reap what they have sown and the inauguration has not even taken place yet.

  • scrubjay

The work week will become 24/16. Everyone will have a 3-day job and a 2-day job. The American economy will standardize to MON-TUE-WED and THU FRI to accommodate the work force.

  • redheadgrl

I would put a description to the line item surcharge: “This surcharge is for ACA, also known as ‘Obamacare'”. People that voted for Mr. Obama need to start seeing the cost of their vote.

  • aZjimbo

What’s the old saying: elections have ……………………………

  • Jay

The ignorant Obama voters (but I repeat myself) won’t understand. They’ll just blame Denny’s because they’re part of the evil, rich 1%. After the regime is done forcing the Catholics and Hobby Lobby to open abortion clinics, they’ll come after Denny’s and anybody else that doesn’t toe the PC line handed down from the throne.
