Dick Durbin not willing to give entitlement reform even for GOP concession on tax increases

This is why Republicans should NOT cave on tax increases because they’ll just end up holding an empty bag and the country will lose again:

POLITICO – Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin has a message for Republicans insisting on wholesale changes to entitlement programs in exchange for new tax revenue: not yet.

In a speech later this morning that seeks to crystalize the progressive approach to deficit reduction, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat will try to split the debate about overhauling Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from the negotiations over resolving the fiscal cliff.

“Progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of Medicare and Medicaid but those conversations should not be part of a plan to avert the fiscal cliff,” Durbin says, according to excerpts provided by his office. The speech is taking place at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank.

The Illinois Democrat reiterates the view of many in his party that Social Security isn’t a driver of the nation’s deficit. And he insisted that current beneficiaries be protected from changes to any program.

Little Dick Durbin… small mind, small man.

Look long and hard at the face of the enemy.

    • Don

“Dirty” Dick Durbin is another scumbag from the communist heartland known as Illinois. It is the cesspool that has spawned the anti-American attacks that are so prevalent in the current administration. Obama was chosen for being the charismatic narcissist the he undeniably is. His obvious incompetence in every area of our economy and his complete inability to ever tell the truth were the prerequisites that made him perfect to be the mindless puppet of this movement.

      • For amplification, for every SS collector requires 3 working schmucks to fund. With only 47% of us pay taxes, there is no way out. http://youtube.qr.net/jOen/watch?v=ZHL6wiGUymI

        • Don

I undersrand your position, but a large percentage of those retiring have paid taxes and social security their entire lives. Due to no fault of their own, millions of non- contributers have been added to dilute the system to go along with outright fraud and corruption by degenerate politicians who have robbed it blind. Jennifer, you will be forced to contribute your entire life with little or no hope of being reimbursed for your efforts because elected thieves, with no conscience whatsoever, will have bled it dry.

    • GreenBeretWay

Durbin needs to take his Monkey Butt smelling azz back to Chitcago!

  • Ryan Mobley

“The Illinois Democrat reiterates the view of many in his party that Social Security isn’t a driver of the nation’s deficit. ”

Sure. It’s just one of 16 trillion anchors tied to me and my generations necks.

    • carmtom13

If they would not have borrowed money from the S/S fund the money would be there. BHO did the same he took millions out of Medicare and used it for obamacare. That is a major problem with these spend thrifts, they spend money that they don’t have, borrow it from china or whatever country will loan it to us and that’s why we have this huge debt.

      • Not necessarily. It just wouldn’t have run out as fast but it would still have run out eventually since there are still more takers, that take more than they put in, to those that contribute.

Regardless there is nothing constitutional about entitlements including SS. there is no right to retire. That is a 20th century invention.

        • MiketheMarine

Correct. For amplification, for every SS collector requires 3 working schmucks to fund. With only 47% of us pay taxes, there is no way out.

      • E. Lee Zimmerman

Yeah, methinks that was proven false in an article somewheres. I’ll Google it to see if I can find it. I thought I’d read that even if they’d left the SS lockbox alone there still wouldn’t be enough in there to fund the pay-out at current levels.

    • bbitter

You are right that many on the ‘left’ don’t see entitlement as a problem. However, they know that it is driving debt. They just view it as a necessity, so you have to logically raise the revenue/taxes to pay for the necessity.

The question is not ‘does this help people?’ -as they claim. The question is ‘what people does this really ‘help’?

It is a necessity for their power base and ideology, it doesn’t really help people – those on SS and entitlements are only helped when they get OFF it and stand on their own feet. Freedom has a steep cost but is sweet while slavery is harsh and only makes you think it is easier, I just wish the current generations understood it better. If you look through U.S. history, honestly look, you’ll see that while other parties have mixed backgrounds through societal changes, the dems have always been on the racial divide, the side of slavery, extortion, and monolithic power; they thrive on a static societal caste system and don’t like competition of any kind.

It shouldn’t be about party, and there should be ideologies that are ‘off the table’ when it comes to the leadership of the U.S. The Founders thought so, which is why we have a constitution with a bill of rights.

      We’ve forgotten that.

    • LiveFreeOrDie2012

Actually Social Security is not even included the $16T national debt. If you include our unfunded liabilities into the national debt, the U.S. is faced with $61T in unfunded obligations.

      • Correct!!! And thank you for reminding me!~

      • E. Lee Zimmerman

The last I’d read was that unfunded liabilities was in the $100T level, no?

    • E. Lee Zimmerman

Isn’t SS considered one of the “unfunded liabilities”? If so, that Dick’s logic, as flawed as it is.

  • SpikeT

The whirling Durbin of Leftist Lambada dances his way through his high seniority charade and has not a whit of conscience…he knows that he is a”well behaved” zombie for all thing destructive. is only strength lies/lays/lusts in the knowledge that hid constituents are products of 50+ years of thought massaging by two sinister LEFT hands.

    • E. Lee Zimmerman

Whirling Durbin? That sounds like an action figure or a kid’s doll.

      • Jay

In IL we like to use the phrase, “Lying sack of Durbin.”

  • Joengima

Like Obama said “It’s Math, It’s Arithmetic”

    2 + 2= 4

    Fiscal Cliff = Higher Taxes
    Bad Economy = Fiscal Cliff
    Dems Want= GOP Cave
    GOP Cave = Higher Taxes

    2 + 2 = 4

    Bad Economy = Higher Taxes
    Dems Want = Higher Taxes

    2 + 2 = 4

Higher Taxes + GOP Caving = Dems Want = Fiscal Cliff + Bad Economy

    Math is pretty easy.

Whether by Fiscal Cliff or GOP Caving Dems get what they want.

    • E. Lee Zimmerman

And God bless the Muslims for giving us math.

    • MiketheMarine

Didn’t Maobama admit he failed all math beyond 7th grade?

  • warpmine

PoS lying bastard he is. Isn’t the disability that a new found quantity that cannot find work, now classified as disabled part of that SSI fund or is it part of the massive unemployment insurance scam? Either way, both are responsible for creating more debt considering the government still borrows from anywhere people are dumb enough to buy her debt to pay it’s citizens not to work.

The country has a serious mental problem that it refuses to address which is that entitlement mentality which will come knocking at the door when there simply no more money to give out. Two things will then happen, either they will wake up and get back to realistic principles or they’re will be a revolution and then civil war between those that are honest hardworking folks and the give me everything so that I may live without consequences crowd.

Looking “forward” to the outcome myself though I may struggle through it all.

  • Well folks, from the looks of it, it seems this manufactured scenario will be pushed along, for lets say… another 3 to 6 months. The dismantling of America continues.

  • carmtom13

When is Durbin and the rest of the numbskulls in DC going to stop saying that social security is an entitlement? It is not an entitlement!! People have been contributing to it from the first day they started working. It is not government money it is the peoples money. Enough all ready with Durbin and the rest of the libs in his party saying it is an entitlement and trying to scare the seniors. Hey Durbin why don’t you all do some reforms in your benefits and the rest of government employees?

    • MiketheMarine

But to be fair to my generation, born in 1970, the amount that seniors donated when they were working isn’t even a drop in the bucket compared to what they are receiving.

    • It is an entitlement because you receive more back than you pay in. Same with Medicare.

  • WhiteGuy2

Another credit rating downgrade is inevitable. The question is what will be the effect on the economy if further downgrades happen.

S&P’s statement was blunt in its assessment.

“We lowered our long-term rating on the U.S. because we believe that the prolonged controversy over raising the statutory debt ceiling and the related fiscal policy debate indicate that further near-term progress containing the growth in public spending, especially on entitlements, or on reaching an agreement on raising revenues is less likely than we previously assumed and will remain a contentious and fitful process,” the ratings firm said.

The downgrade will have a ripple effect around the world.

Asian central banks are the largest foreign holders of U.S. Treasury securities. China is the U.S.’ largest foreign creditor, holding $1.16 trillion in Treasury securities, followed by Japan with $912.4 billion.

Reacting to the downgrade, China’s official news agency, Xinhua, criticized the U.S. for its “short-sighted political wrangling,” and called for a new global reserve currency to replace the dollar. China “has every right now to demand the United States to address its structural debt problems and ensure the safety of China’s dollar assets,” Xinhua said.

Earlier this week, China’s central bank governor had urged the U.S. to “take responsible policy measures to handle its debt.”

    • I thought that the Federal Reserve passed up China as our biggest foreign creditor.

      • Doesn’t matter. People don’t seem to realize the effect of being the reserve currency.

  • What people need to realize is that the term “fiscal cliff” is just political buzz word designed to create an emotional response from the pubic which is just preparation for what they are about to do. Essentially, it is propaganda.

We passed up the point of no return a long time ago. No objective, legitimate, or relevant economist actually claims that we can pay off the debt, or severely reduce spending without going into a major depression, and destroying the currency.

It doesn’t really matter what they do in the next couple of months concerning taxes and spending (in the big picture) because austerity was the plan, and was forseeable a long, long, time ago.

Austerity was innevitable not because of spending and debt levels, but because this was the plan all along by the establishment. The real solutions are actually quite well known, but never an option. Why? The reason is that real solutions would destoy the plan of the globalists to shut down our country, and steal our wealth through fraudulent money creation and debt.

What we are now watching is our treasonist politicians carrying out a plan that they agree on behind closed doors, but put up a show for us on TV to keep us from recognizing the real solutions, their argumentation as being a fraud, and that their interest is in keeping us divided and stuck in a futile partisan mindset. The establishment is not partisan, so why are we buying into it?

If you want real solutions, then advocate for a sovereign currency regulated by congress, and market interest rates. Let the big banks fail, and take the hit. Make government go through the people to get money, rather than having a central bank print it up. Get us out of all international treaties that control our resources and industries, and send our industries overseas. Nobody talks about NAFTA and GATT anymore.

What we are seeing on TV, and in the congress is just national propaganda theatre.

    • Trouble is they won’t let the banks fail. Not a chance. That is why you are seeing more and more news stories about 401k confiscation.

      • I knew that they were taking our troops death benefits from families, but hadn’t really heard about 401ks being confiscated. Alex Jones and others have been warning about it for years, but I wasn’t sure how they could do it until Greece started doing it. I thought that things would have to get much worse before it actually happen here.

The interesting thing to me is that the stock market is about 80% inflated, so when they finally let it go, 401Ks will vanish anyway.

I tried pulling out my 401k a year or so ago, but I can’t until I don’t work there anymore. I never did like tax differed investments.

        • Things are about to get much worse.

      • E. Lee Zimmerman

This is only a resurgence in considering going after 401ks, though. During the ‘Age of Clinton,’ politicos were heavily throwing around the taxation of 401ks and even company-sponsored healthcare as ‘imputed income.’ Any way they can increase the draw of money, they will. I’m honestly surprised it didn’t happen under Clinton.

        • Connect the dots. Every time they start bandying things about, especially this administration, things tend to happen.

Many things we thought would never ever happen in a million years have come to pass.

I am now reading about three articles per day from business and investment sites on the subject.

The country wasn’t nearly as leftward bent or brazen under Clinton. It is now since Americans always tend to think more is better.

Dick, can I call you DICK?

    Dick, Dick, DICK,
    you PROGRESSIVES make me sick!
    and you continue to HACK,
    Thanks to O-blame-o voters,
we NOW have to listen to this PRICK!

Sorry, I dont care for PROGS, and now they think they can TAKE-OVER?

    Over my …………………….

    • Jay

If you were going to say “Over my dead body,” libtards call that “The scenic route.”

  • Conservator1

It’s a good reason for Republicans not to cave, but I’m not holding my breathe. Republicans are far to weak to stand the heat from leftist MSM. Heaven forbid if they are labeled obstructionists, the filibuster party in the Senate or cow towing to the rich.

Far to many of them will be more concern about the next election than supporting the pro-growth economic plans they touted during the campaign season. And it will only get worse for conservatives on a host of issues since some Republicans are already showing their acquiescent game-plan to Obama and Democrats in Congress.

  • johnos2112

What the hell is wrong with someone ANYONE on the right standing up and saying the following: Until the Democrats are willing to make immediate 10% cuts across the board to entitlements, pensions, etc., and make those cuts NOW there is no deal! And NOT reducing the tax rates is not a part of the deal. This will make the economy much worse. Until these items are put into place then Mr. President you call tell the American people the bad news!

    • E. Lee Zimmerman

Because the Right (like the Left) is full of cowards. Both sides of the aisle is corrupt.

      • johnos2112

        Both sides are cowards!

  • Yazz55

The democrats are indeed giving the republicans something in return for their massive tax increases

… massive spending & entitlement increases

  • Sandra123456

Let’s raise taxes. Bird will sing prettier. The Skies will be bluer. Strangers will hug each other. Enemies will become friends. The economy will roar to new heights, and a cure for cancer found if we just raise taxes.

Let’s tax eveyone at 100% and let the government send us an allowance. Think of what we could accomplish.

I can’t stand these arrogant fools in Washington.

    • Rshill7

Let’s bring in a maximum wage too, and make it the same as the minimum wage. Then lets all clank our chains on cue.

      • Sandra123456

Minimum wage should be $50/hour. Big Business can afford that and we can buy the $15.00 double cheeseburgers with our food stamps.

    • E. Lee Zimmerman

And don’t forget: raising taxes has been proven to turn back the tides. Showbama told us so.

  • Hologram5

This fool along with MANY others need a sound thrashing. A good arse kicking will surely open their minds up a little huh?

  • Rshill7

Look, it’s one of those demolition derby drivers…Dick. Would that he were driving his own car rather than ours. We’ve a lot of crazy ass drivers with their hands on the wheel don’t we? We could be racing like Nascar at Talladega, or more appropriately,an endless drag strip.

Instead they’re careening into one another on purpose and the audience can’t seem to see the chaos going on in the arena. The sounds they chalk up to their vivid imaginations I guess.

Playing chicken with suicidal maniacs is what the Republicans versus Democrats is like. Add to that the announcer, Goebells on steroids, and you’re left with a bunch of scaredy cats wondering why their pretzels are so soggy.

I say call the suicide maniac’s bluff. Go right into the cuckoo’s nest with him and and see who breaks the most eggs. The media keeps repeating that our side is crazy. Let’s rise to the occasion. Wipe the tire tracks off of your faces from the last cliff clash and start leaving cleat marks on theirs.

    • Totally agree. They want to play chicken…let them.

  • I don’t see how Republicans have any leverage to deal in this situation. Obama can wait till the last minute for the Republicans to go with his plan or be blamed for raising taxes on everyone.

    • johnos2112

It is funny because in 2010 we had Obama by the balls. He is re elected, the house and senate are the same, and now he can blame the right? Screw Obama! Tell the right story and educate the ignorant!

      • yes, they will be blamed for the fake ‘fiscal cliff’

        • johnos2112

I don’t think the fiscal cliff is fake.  But I do agree the message is fake.  How can raising taxes on anyone make the situation better AND not make IMMEDIATE spending cuts?  This is complete bullshit!  Nobody wins.  I don’t fault people for taking a pension of 65% or whatever they agreed to on the final salary.  What I don’t get is for example, when the City of Stockton approached the union heads to make a concession to lower the pension rates, what happened?  Oh that’s right 25% of police officers were laid off, 35% of firefighters were laid off AND 43% of public sector employees were let and they still filed for BK!  The unions said no so the city let people go and many people lost their pensions.   The Union goons in this country better have protection because when the smoke clears they are gonna be wanted men and women!

          • If raising taxes on anyone won’t make the situation better, and I agree with that, then I’m thinking let Obama have it, let him have the blame.

…with people like Senate Majority Whip Dickie D. in charge of America all I can say is , this COUNTRY IS LOST !”

  • sjmom

Durbin is another tentacle of the Evil Octopus which we call our govt and another who, if I were to say what I really think about him, would compromise my Christian walk. Therefore, I will zip my lip.

  • E. Lee Zimmerman

Dick Durbin, better known locally as ‘Durb the Turd’ in parts of IL where I’m from originally. This guy is as big a political windbag that you can get. I wouldn’t give him the time of day, much less tax concessions.

  • Here we go. Geronimo!! Which may not be as bad as capitulating with the Brain dead liberals.

  • Republicans should not give up ANYTHING. Remember, the Democrats are going to blame the Republicans for whatever happens. If there ARE cuts to Medicare or Medicaid, it will NOT be seen as a step towards fiscal stability for the sake of the nation, it WILL be portrayed by the Democrats as those “evil” Republicans cutting benefits to sick black children of single mothers that walk with a limp. Those “heartless” S.O.B.’s, just look at what they did. Forget it. We’ll get blamed, so lets all go over the cliff so that EVERYBODY shares in the pain. To quote our “fearless” leader in the White House, that’s just fair. Right?

  • Scoop summed it up exactly.

  • toongoon

I have come to believe that the entire partisan quarreling is nothing but a distraction, a side show for for our benefit while the political elites are setting themselves up to be insulated from the fallout of what they have done to the country. It is the only logical explanation for the ineptitude of the Republicans an the boldness of the Democrats. We continue to root on our side and boo when they screw up. Senate Republicans being a minority against Harry Reid does not mean they can’t speak out.
It’s a perfect plan. It keeps us entertained and from doing what we need to do.

    • louisiana_mom

I agree. It would not surprise me, if the Political Class haven’t already worked out a deal and now are doing the drama/circus part for the benefit of the voters.

      • toongoon

I think so mom, probably prior to the 2008 election.

  • MiketheMarine

Durbin sux. Another wonderful tax and spend creature like MD’s Steny Hoyer. Why, the hell do I stay in this state? I need my head examined.

I say step on the gas, and lets have the crash now.

They would not let the housing market bottom out, and we are stuck with a housing bust for 20-30 years and it will cost 20 times as much to fix IF EV-VER!

This is DEPRESSION type tactics O-BLAME-O is using like Ruuusevelt, so get ready for a rough ride unless we decide to get on with it.

GOD I WISH THE RE-PUBES would get some backbone and speak the truth.

People, friends, with all these guns being sold in AMERICA, we know where this is headed
and what this us all about as long as AL SHAAAAP-TON is out there SPEWING on TV no less.

IT IS ALL ABOUT REPARTAIONS, FOLKS. AND it won’t stop untill they take all they can from the “rich”, uh “white folks with stuff”. The GOV (O, Durban, etc) is giving permission right now for UNIONS to act ugly, and some areas 99% of the people are ready to go get stuff.

My kid just moved to Tennesee from TEXAS because we are being over-run from Mexico, I kid you not.

Here is the city some hispanic kids (know nothing of them except they were mean ones, maybe drugsters?) SHOT a man for his “cell phone” (really?) in a upper neighborhood (huh, why?) and then 10 cop cars and 3 helicopters chased him down (all kinds of big bad guns drawn, made me think these kids were REALLY bad CARTEL dudes?).

Took the cops over an hour to calm down and buckle up the heavy weapons after trapping the kiddoes on my dead end street.

WAS NOT FUNNY, but the people in my new “simple” older neighborhood had a long talk and laughs with cops for HOURS? (and of course local TV had many spots)

AND I though Houston was bad, kids only had chains and swithblades when I was a kid growing up.

It is like “LORD of the FLYS” out there NOW, and O-BLAME-O has set off a chain reaction we will not be able to stop now.

FIghting this slowly and giving in will drive us all crazy, I say let them drive it off the cliff and into the CANYON.

THEN, maybe we can put something back together. We can not afford another 600k slaughter of Americans like we did 150 years ago.

    Vote PRTESENT.

  • DavidRobertson

Caught a quick TV News clip today where the reporter was saying that all the proposals on the table that address killing loopholes don’t mathematically bring in enough to hit the revenue targets, so therefore increases need to be considered too…

I immediately almost vomited in my mouth. These Republicans have already caved to attempting to meet O’s tax revenue targets??? what??? So, let me get this straight, we have both parties who think that the problem with government is that they just need more money to cover their costs. Not one person that has any power or influence thinks that we spend too much? NOOOOOO, it’s a revenue problem. We are doomed.

    • toongoon

Since the crash has been the making for decades, it was only a matter of musical chairs; Who would be in elected office when happened and how they would protect themselves in the end. The money, our money, is being used to finance anything but what it is supposed to financing. They continue to steal our hard earned money while they are enriching themselves. They will be leaving us in the dust and debt of unfriendly countries who demand their money back.

  • PapaLouie

Republicans are offering concessions left and right, from tax increases to a new dream act. But what have Democrats offered to Republicans? Doesn’t “compromise” mean that both sides offer concessions?

By revealing their cards up front, Republicans have convinced Democrats that they don’t need to offer concessions to get what they want. The public now expects Republicans to cave on tax increases even if they get nothing in return. So if no compromise is reached, the public will blame Republicans even if they are the only ones willing to make concessions.

Why are some of our politicians like Boehner, Chambliss, McCain, and Graham so stupid? They are so quick to stab us in the back, but for what? Do they think Democrats and the media will love them if they betray the conservative base and throw away their bargaining chips?

  • wodiej

I have a personal story for a time such as this. I am of small stature so my mother told me from the time I was very young that I had to be “sassy” or people would walk all over me. I took her literally (she had no idea….). So I met some bullies after school twice my size throughout elementary and Jr. high and they would always back down because I was so feisty. A few might have feared me but I am guessing most just admired my courage and determination to expect respect. The Republicans need to stand their ground.

  • Haywoodjbl

WHO CARES what this idiot is “offering” or not? Not me……just do nothing….

  • People wonder why secession talk is so strong. Half the country believes in liberty, freedom, living within your means and the other half believes it has the right to other people’s money. I really do believe we have crossed the Rubicon as a United country.

  • hbnolikeee

This reminds me of that Charlie Brown bit wherein he tries to kick the football and Lucy ALWAYS pulls it away. How many deals have these lying democrats promised to include entitlement reform in exchange for a tax increase only to not come through with their side of the deal?

Are the GOP that stupid to keep doing this? It’s looking like a yes…

  • Jay

I’ve written to my senator Durbin on subjects such as defunding Planned Parenthood and Kagan for SCOTUS. He truly is a Dick. I’m in the process of moving to Iowa. I just hope that’s far enough.

I believe that the majority of these politicians grew up on weed, just like Obama. Do some research and find out the long term effects on your brain. This is why the communist would prefer legalizing pot will they control the size of your soda. A person on pot is a person who’s brain is shot.

  • mikeinidaho

Just like Reagan’s battle with the Demunists in the 80’s! They want tax increases before ANY talk (let alone action) on reforms in spending. When it comes down to it, they refuse to consider spending cuts once they have the tax increases. Any Repubs that go along with this BS again are fools and do not represent their constituents.
