DNC website blatantly lies about Democrat history on civil rights

Jeffrey Lord over at American Spectator noticed something a little strange on the DNC website. They are claiming in 2 different sections of the website to be the party that was on the side of civil rights for over 200 years:

Lie Number One: Check the “Our History” section, found here of the DNC’s website. See it? The history section — now written to reflect the history of the Obama administration — begins with this breathtakingly bold lie:

For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights…..

Lie Number Two: Then check here to see the DNC’s “Issues” section on civil rights. That section begins with a second bold lie. This one:

Democrats have a long and proud history of defending Civil Rights and expanding opportunity for all Americans.

Lord says much more about it, but my favorite part was his demonstration of why this is patently false:

  • Supported slavery in 6 platforms from 1840-1860.
  • Opposed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution that successively wiped out slavery and gave both legal rights and voting rights to black Americans.
  • Supported segregation actively or by silence in 20 platforms from 1868-1948.
  • Opposed anti-lynching laws, specifically supported by the GOP in four platforms between 1912 and 1928.
  • Opposed the GOP-sponsored Civil Rights Acts of 1866, which focused on legal equality for blacks.
  • Opposed the GOP on giving voting rights to blacks in the District of Columbia in 1867. The legislation was passed over the Democrats’ objection..
  • Nominated an 1868 presidential ticket of New York Governor Horatio Seymour and ex-Missouri Congressman Francis Blair. The Democrats pledged they would declare the Civil Rights laws passed by the GOP “null and void” and would refuse to enforce them. They lost to Ulysses Grant.
  • Opposed the Enforcement Acts, three laws passed by the GOP between 1870 and 1871 targeting the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and making it a federal crime to block the right of blacks to vote, hold office, serve on juries and have equal protection of the laws with whites.
  • Opposed the GOP Civil Rights Act of 1875, which prohibited discrimination of blacks in public accommodations.
  • Used the Ku Klux Klan as what Columbia University historian Eric Foner calls “a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.” Nor is there reference to University of North Carolina historian Allen Trelease’s description of the Klan as the “terrorist arm of the Democratic Party.” Nor is there mention of the infamous 1924 Democratic Convention — the “Klanbake” as it is known to history because hundreds of the delegates were Klan members. The Klan-written platform mixed the traditional Democratic message of progressivism and racism in the Klan-written platform.
  • Repealed the Civil Rights laws enacted by GOP Congresses and presidents, already damaged by the Supreme Court. When Democrats gained control of both Congress and the White House in 1892, the Democrats’ President Grover Cleveland signed the repeal on February 8, 1894.

I’d love to see Matt Lauer or other ‘journalists’ in the MSM corner Democrats on these blatant lies just as they have been doing to Paul Ryan over his RNC speech. After all, if it were the RNC we know they’d be all over this.

Given that these lies are so blatant, I’ve been inspired to give the DNC website the award it deserves – the Liberty Facepalm Award:

  • Laughable and Revisionist History…GOP party of Lincoln….Dems…party of Slavery….GOP fought to have Civil Rights Act passed….Dems fought to Vote Down….Byrd from West VA….former Chief of the KKK….and where in the GOP????

Revisions are fun when the truth is disgarded and a new reality created!

  • Sandra123456

Good luck with the truth with the liars and the ignorant and misinformed people we have in the MSM.

  • Spartan1975

Seriously those people should be sued for deliberatly lying and changing history like that!
Are we no longer living in a country based on integrity!

    • NYGino

Too bad your question, when referring to Democrats, is rhetorical these days.

  • Civil Rights Acts of 1866

    that a source error ?

    • JeffWRidge

You have just demonstrated one of the major differences between the right and the left. When we on the right learn that we have gotten something wrong, we acknowledge it and learn from it. Most lefties, maybe even all, would have either deleted the post, or edited out the error. You make me proud.

      • LOL I learned long ago its just easier to own up to it…and I am somewhat lazy so I like the easy way 🙂
seriously I never could figure out why people hated to own up to errors. in my experience those that didn’t were found out anyways.
        thank you 🙂

  • Don

The DNC’s only hope is confusing the American public’s perception of reality with constant lies and deceptions. When the truth becomes your enemy then integrity is lost to the point it becomes embarrassing to even their most brainwashed lemmings. Never in our history has there been a president who lies constantly with such ease. Even Obama’s sychophants are being exposed on every level for their lies at every turn. The fact that the lies are being cheered by manipulated crowds is exposing the intellectual bankruptcy that is prevalent in those they control.

  • MrMicawber

RNC should make this a front and center issue. I sometimes wonder why they don’t take advantage of all this low hanging fruit.

  • brendawatkins

Because truth won’t help the cause.

    • MrMicawber

I don’t know – prolly the average African American does not know this. It may shock them into voting GOP. Plus, even if not, it makes the DNC look like the liars they are. Makes their racism charges sound like outright hypocrisy. The truth will hurt them in one way or another.

  • Nukeman60

The DNC always reminds me of the corrupt Senator (played by Ned Beatty) in the movie Shooter when he said, “The truth is what I say it is”.

Pretty much describes them to a tee. I wonder if Matt Lauer will get the ‘independent fact-checkers’ to check the DNC website out? No, probably not.

  • I think with Liberals, the truth is not FACT and facts are not truth! But the truth is relative… Relative to whether they need to twist it for political gain or completely ignore it. There are lies, damned lies and Liberal “truths and facts.”

  • This is what America needs to know… Romney should pound away on this!!!

    • Copy/paste it onto liberal message boards and see the reaction! 🙂

      • wodiej

lol…you don’t want the mental wards to overflow w new patients do you?

  • CaseyGeorge

To discuss this on the RightScoop is RAAAAACCCCIIIIIIIISSSSSTTTT….because racism

  • denbren52

Tell the same lies enough and people will believe it as the truth. This is a perfect example of that truism.

The lie has now become fact and you’ll never convince the blind followers of Obama who see him as messiah. They have become enslaved by the government: 46.7 million Americans on food stamps and $16 TRILLION dollars in debt. The legacy of the Obama years will linger for generations!

  • No surprise. Look at all the lies from Elizabeth Warren, who is going to introduce Bill Clinton at the DNC on Wednesday. She is a serial liar and now Native American Delegates are questioning her at the DNC! The only connection Elizabeth Warren has to the Cherokee is that one of her ancestors helped round them up to send them to Oklahoma on the “Trail of Tears.”

    • I’m sure the Dems will call that an early Civil Rights March, then.

      • warpmine

        LOL Bob

  • JeffWRidge

Well done, Mr. Lord. This is the kind of information that the GOP should be pushing everywhere. Make the people aware of the true history of the Democrat Party.

  • Good Grief! The Dems have lied so often and for so long they believe their own lies!

    • warpmine

They must seriously believe that because they say so, it is so.

      Freaking brain damaged.

  • Plus, the founders of NAACP were three old white Republicans!

  • Joe

    Let’s think about this

    This must hurt! >>>>>>

  • J S

Please post this and spread it around. I post this on other forums and I NEVER get any progressives to refute it. It shuts them right up.

    Just a small excerpt:

    November 6, 1956
African-American civil rights leaders Martin Luther King and Ralph Abernathy vote for Republican Dwight Eisenhower for President

    September 9, 1957
President Dwight Eisenhower signs Republican Party’s 1957 Civil Rights Act

“Democrats are unwavering in our support of equal opportunity for all Americans. That’s why we’ve worked to pass every one of our nation’s Civil Rights laws… On every civil rights issue, Democrats have led the fight.”

    September 24, 1957
Sparking criticism from Democrats such as Senators John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, President Dwight Eisenhower deploys the 82nd Airborne Division to Little Rock, AR to force Democrat Governor Orval Faubus to integrate public schools

    May 6, 1960
President Dwight Eisenhower signs Republicans’ Civil Rights Act of 1960, overcoming 125-hour, around-the-clock filibuster by 18 Senate Democrats

    May 2, 1963
Republicans condemn Democrat sheriff of Birmingham, AL for arresting over 2,000 African-American schoolchildren marching for their civil rights

    September 29, 1963
Gov. George Wallace (D-AL) defies order by U.S. District Judge Frank Johnson, appointed by President Dwight Eisenhower, to integrate Tuskegee High School

    June 9, 1964
Republicans condemn 14-hour filibuster against 1964 Civil Rights Act by U.S. Senator and former Ku Klux Klansman Robert Byrd (D-WV), who still serves in the Senate

    June 10, 1964
Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen (R-IL) criticizes Democrat filibuster against 1964 Civil Rights Act, calls on Democrats to stop opposing racial equality. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was introduced and approved by a staggering majority of Republicans in the Senate. The Act was opposed by most southern Democrat senators, several of whom were proud segregationists—one of them being Al Gore Sr. Democrat President Lyndon B. Johnson relied on Illinois Senator Everett Dirksen, the Republican leader from Illinois, to get the Act passed.

    August 4, 1965
Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen (R-IL) overcomes Democrat attempts to block 1965 Voting Rights Act; 94% of Senate Republicans vote for landmark civil right legislation, while 27% of Democrats oppose. Voting Rights Act of 1965, abolishing literacy tests and other measures devised by Democrats to prevent African-Americans from voting, signed into law; higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats vote in favor

    • 1water

      Thanks for the list.

I’ve checked about Robert Byrd and found something you can include: Robert Byrd went two years ago below the surface (see Robert Byrd, Longest-Serving U.S. Senator, Dies at 92) — so you can update your saved template.

      • Robert Byrd is a really peculiar person to have as a Democrat if they’re going for the civil rights act angle. In ~1985, he lost a grandchild and said he realized that black parents love their children just like white people. 1985! He’s said similar things all the way to 2005 that I know of.

  • Yazz55

Factual or not, the obmessiah faithful will repeat it on command as if it were gospel.

  • tvlgds

Kevin Jackson’s book “The Big Black Lie” covers all of the real history of the democrats and civil rights. Zo covers it well, too.

  • Joseph ewing

Not listed was that in more recent history, a greater percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the 1965 Civil Rights Act.

Al Gore’s daddy – voted no.

  • OHJan

One thing that I try to impress on my children… Study hard! Read! Learn! When blacks were slaves it was against the law for them to learn to read… wisdom is power. I truly believe that the reason dems want to control schools is to dumb down kids, especially minorities, so they (minorities) have no power, they just do what they are told by the party that “has compassion for them”… not like those mean ol’ Republicans who don’t care.
I thank God for Ed Choice in Ohio and other scholarship programs that help some children escape from public schools. One of the first thing Obama did as President was to discontinue the D.C Opportunity Scholarship Program. The students came to him crying to continue it so he let those already started in the program finish but no new students were able to start. That’s the dem’s plan to ‘get out the vote’… just don’t let them get an education, re-write history and keep the wheels turning on the “propaganda machine”. Which party REALLY wants to keep them in chains?

  • Patriot077

They can say they supported civil rights for 200 years but they can’t list one damn accomplishment. Because it is a bald faced lie like so much of their drivel.

  • wodiej

That rightly deserves 5 Pinocchio’s. I only found all this out about a year ago. It’s about darn time the conservatives spoke up. For crying out loud, what took them so long?? I heard Allen West bring up this very subject just the other day. I hope other conservatives grab this information and keep talking about it until every single person knows the truth.

  • kong1967

But, RS, there’s a simple explanation. The racists switched parties.

I’m not surprised by these blatant lies. Same ‘ol same ‘ol. As long as people don’t know history they (the Democrats) can afford to lie out their butts.

  • They got in shape for this massive campaign of lies by working hard on Global Warming hysteria for decades.

The only true believers on the left are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, big time.

  • WhiteGuy2

The truth is that the Democrat party has gotten away with telling these blatant lies for over a hundred years because the GOP lets them. Why ? I have no fricken idea why.

    • J S

Why? Because they owned the media until the Internet and Fox News. We also thought voters were too smart to believe their lies.

Oh and the GOP are a bunch of wimps. I still don’t understand how voters in IL have voted in Tricky Dickie Durbin into congress time after time since “82”.

Keep in mind most of the poor and low income voters only have the major networks to watch and get their news from.

  • I guess the Democrats missed people like George Wallace, Bull Connor, and Robert Byrd (who was a grand wizard in the KKK), to name just a few of the Democrats, who did more to set back the civil rights movement in this nation than anything (or anybody) else. Democrats would like to forget this sorry part of their history, and I can see why. Kind of makes it hard for Democrats to sell the idea that they’re the party for African Americans when their immediate predecessors specialized in burning crosses and hanging blacks from trees.

  • Galatiansch2vs20

And let’s not leave out the Republican party platform supporting the Creator-given right to life of the unborn and not having taxpayer funded abortions while the Democrats stand with Planned Parenthood, whose founder, Margaret Sanger believed in eugenics:

  • tdvann

Coming from this Orwellian administration I’m, sadly, not surprised to their re-writing of history. Who is their Winston Smith? (You want to see something creepy check out the Big Brother size of the screen that will be activated for the Obama biopic narrated by Tom Hanks)
Given that they have proven adept at handling their property. (there was no slave rebellion of note or consequence in the Pre-Civil War Democrat controlled Slave States). I would say that Lyndon Johnson’s plan to destroy the nuclear family unit for Americans of African descent and replace the “father” with the “Massa” in the form of the U.S. Government, so that the Democrat party could reclaim “ownership” of their property, (it was always about votes, look at the unholy 2/3 compromise) has proven succesful beyond his wildest dreams. The Democrat Party now “owns” those people through their votes, and has indoctrinated them to the pont where they believe their liberators were their Slave Masters.

  • Why do black voters tolerate racist Democrats such as Bill Clinton and Joe Biden?

    I have no idea. Habit?

William Jefferson Blythe Clinton is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at the Democrat National Convention on Wednesday. It’s doubtful America’s scandalized 42nd president will mention his impeachment or his Oral Office encounters with Monica Lewinsky any more than he will comment on his observation to the late Ted Kennedy that ”A few years ago, this guy [Obama] would have been carrying our bags.”

    Say what?

That racist observation might seem like a Republican smear of Clinton but it’s far from it. It appeared in a 2008 article by Ryan Lizza in the arch-liberal NewYorker magazine outlining the Clinton camp’s vicious attacks on Obama during the dirty 2008 Democrat primary campaign.

Fortuitously in time for the Charlotte convention, Lizza clarified Clinton’s words of just four years ago by telling CNN’s Soledad O’Brien that “I don’t think it’s racial. I don’t think Bill Clinton has a racist bone in his body.”

Of course not ! Bull Connor and Elijah Muhammad never had a a racist in their bodies either so how could ”America’s first black president,” according to Toni Morrison, (a designation later retracted), a semi-progressive Democrat who was supported by the vast majority of African-American voters in 1992 and 1996, cast such a nasty racist aspersion on Obama?

For that matter, how could then-Democrat senator Joe Biden describe Obama in 2008 as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy” and still be picked by Obama as his running mate?

Weren’t Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson articulate, bright, clean, nice-looking African-Americans when they ran for president, Mr. Biden?

Isn’t it as racist to single out Obama as a somehow special African-American simply because he can speak well, is smart, bathes regularly, and doesn’t scare dogs and small kids by his looks as racist as Bubba saying Obama would be an obsequious hotel or airport baggage-handler “a few years ago”?

Maybe during those relatively few years a sea change occurred in the racist thinking of the Democrat Party during which Dems refined their racism by electing an African-American as president rather than regarding Obama as exceptional since he’s smart, clean, etc. and the equivalent of one of those guys at airports who extort payments for labors a well-trained chimp could perform. . .

“For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights…..”

  • Dave B

These people have zero integrity and as such, are capable of blatant barefaced lying.

The truth means nothing to these people, nothing.

  • BTHOM173

I had 14 stitches put in my head as a freedom rider in Alabama by a brick that was thrown by a Klansman. I am a white Republican. We were not fighting Republicans in Alabama. Under the cherished name of civil rights the Democrat Party has simply switched the color of preference. I shall oppose any law that helps a black American as I shed blood in Selma to oppose laws that helped white Americans.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Civil_Rights_Act << looks like it passed so what are we talking about? look im pretty conservative but looks like we do not have all the facts.

  • Michael Stratford

The truth is neither party has been 100% in support of civil liberties. The fact of the matter is throughout history in this country there have been supporters and opposition on both sides of the political spectrum with regard to legislation concerning civil liberties. When they speak of 200 years of supporting civil liberties it was a broad statement, but not one meant to suggest there hasn’t been opposition in the past. Your position that this is a lie is a stretch at the very least.

  • music71

hi ,Abraham Lincoln .Was a Republican and not a Democat ppl! And the ”KKK”was started right after the civil war by the South Democats in 1867…Looks like some one need’s to go back to school and get some HISTORY going in their back ground!!!!!!

  • music71

you cannot rewrite history ,it’s there in black and white the problem is those that don’t know their nation’s history will beieve in any thing ppl will tell them!
