FLASHBACK – Mark Halperin: All Romney needs to do is survive Obama’s ‘disqualifying’ attacks and he’ll win

Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin told Charlie Rose in May of this year that all Romney has to do is survive being disqualified by the Obama campaign, and that if he can do that and then rise to the occasion by using his VP pick, the convention and the debates, then Romney will likely win:

It’s always fun to go back and look at people’s advice in the past and see how it lines up with reality. And in this case, I think it’s lining up pretty good.

Wow, considering Mark Halperin is just a LITTLE biased in his reporting!

My undecided neighbor watched the debate at his house, called me this morning to say he has made up his mind after the last debate and will be voting for Mitt Romney. He said what did it for him was Mitts closing statements, he said he looked into his eyes and just could see a man who was serious, presidential, and spoke with an open heart. When Romney said ” I’LL LEAD YOU IN AN OPEN AND HONEST WAY”, my neighbor said he believed Mitt Romney and says he now knows who to support! I couldnt help but shed a few tears this morning.

    • Romney’s closing statement was one of the greatest things I have ever heard a politician say. It was powerful because of the sincerity that he projected. I was not a fan of Romney during the primaries and I have undergone quite a reversal about him. He seems rock-solid and real now more than I can adequately describe.

Tell your neighbor “Thank You” please.

      • poljunkie

        From me too.

        • ConnieConservative

          Tell him “Welcome Aboard!”

        • bobemakk

          Ditto. AND spread the word.

      • M_J_S

Romney is a rock solid RINO, but next to Obama he looks like George Washington.

When Romney gets elected he will have to deal with more Conservative actors in Congress-especially the Senate.

Boehner still needs to go and Congress in general needs to hold Romney’s feet to the fire.

That being said, Romney has my vote.

      • Orangeone

It’s the only part of the debate I watched!

      • WordsFailMe

Somebody, a fellow citizen of ours, tweeted recently:

“Romney was not my first choice.
Romney was not my second choice.
Romney was not even my thrid choice.

But today I’d crawl through broken glass to vote for him.”

Later, in an edit, he added:

        “And I’d show my I.D.”

    • Orangeone

You have been doing a great job communicating with your neighbor in a kind and gentle manner. Glad he/she watched the debate and hope he/she communicates his/her thought process to their friends too.

    • proudhispanicconservative

      Tell him welcome to liberty!!!!!!!!

    • badbadlibs

I have to be honest, I didn’t watch the debate. I couldn’t because bo was in the room and would have to be subjected to his voice, face and worse, his lies.
However, I watched as much of the after shows last night and this morning. I still have yet to hear one person say anything about Gov. Romney’s closing statement.
All I keep hearing is how Gov. Romney let soft balls slide past him and bo was commanding.
I’m glad to hear his closing statement was a home run and your neighbor saw past bo’s lies.

  • Aikalo80

Romney has shown that he is not the elitist monster portrayed in the pro-Obama ads. Also,by not giving in to the Republican hacks who wanted him to attack Obama, he proved that he is his own man and can work with the Democrats to change this miserable economy.

  • poljunkie

    In the same vein:

Romney won the presidential debate by looking presidential. Obama had a painful case of Biden’s smile!

Romney won the third presidential debate – and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: “I think Governor Romney maybe hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military’s changed.” The audience laughed, Obama laughed, I laughed. It was funny.

But here’s why it was also a vote loser. For a start, Twitter immediately lit up with examples of how the US Army does still use horses and bayonets (horses were used during the invasion of Afghanistan). More importantly, this was one example of many in which the President insulted, patronised and mocked his opponent rather than put across a constructive argument. His performance was rude and unpresidential. Obama seemed to have a touch of the Bidens, wriggling about in his chair, waving his hands dismissively and always – always – smirking in Romney’s direction. By contrast, Romney sucked up the abuse and retained a rigid poker face all night. He looked like a Commander in Chief; Obama looked like a lawyer. Who would you rather vote for?

I hope that’s the way the majority of Americans who watched saw the debate.
To listen to the talking heads today, Gov. Romney was out smarted the entire 90 minutes.

    • Mike Lee

I only wish Romney had then said “The mocker-in-chief has spoken”.

  • WordsFailMe

Obama seems to be doing quite well among the current world dictators: Castro, Putin, Chavez and Ahmadinejad. But then any tyrant can pull these guys.

The real test will be to see how he does among dead world dictators: Mao, Hitler and Genghis Khan.

Obama’s debate performance had no effect on me. The needle doesn’t go past “detestable,”

  • Retired_Coach

I believe in what Gallop and Rasmussen are showing and I’m more confident than ever that Romney will win. Not to ignore the presidential race completely, bu I say we ought t0 be turning our focus the last 2 weeks to those races that we must win in order to take the Senate. It is critical that we win both the White House and a majority in the Senate.

    • hbnolikeee

The democrats don’t want Voter ID… these are thieves and everyone needs to keep a close watch and have their smart phone cameras ready to upload the illegal actions that WILL take place.

    • Orangeone

Triple focus! If you take your eyes off of Barky Boy, he’ll pull out an October or November surprise! He’s already pulling out that slimy Allred to try and destroy another man’s character.

Please also keep focus on the House. The Demorats are trying to destroy Lt. Col. Allen West’s character and the RINOs are allowing it because he holds feet to the fire.

  • sjmom

Well, Mr. Halperin can congratulate himself on his great analysis and political savvy because he called this one and how it would play out. Gotta hand it to him.

  • ChicksLoveRight

Marky mark has a soundbite to calibrate his debate verdicts now!

  • colliemum

Who’d have thunk Halperin made the right prediction!

Mind – he was quite obviously assuming that this wasn’t going to happen, that the Obama campaign would be able to attack Romney in the debates and in ads, and that Romney would not be able ‘to control his image’.
But it is as it is, and Romney will do far better, with Bathhouse Barry doing far worse than in his wildest nightmares.

  • Seems like Halperin had it right, and still does. Romney not only stood up to Obama, but he also defeated him badly during the debates. Watch the polls start to really, really, take off for Romney in the next two weeks. Romney is going to win.

  • codenametimna

Mitt Romney definitely won the debate last night. Reasonable minds saw through the “smoke and mirrors” and they derided Barack Obama’s petulant, schoolyard bully persona. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, looked calm, cool, collected, and Presidential. Barack Obama looked angry and that cold blank stare of his reminded me of a person who seemed vengeful and desperate.

I have NO idea how anybody in his or her right mind could still support this failed president. He has NO plan for America’s future, other than spending taxpayer money until he finally bankrupts the nation. Which will further weaken the economy, and thereby, America would likely become Greece II if Obama gets reelected. With mass rioting and chaos following suit no doubt too. Just as we saw (and continue to see) on the streets of Greece and elsewhere in Europe. In fact, America’s debt burden is currently greater than all of Europe’s debt. The only thing keeping America afloat is the world’s reliance on the United States’ monetary system… the dollar. But with the dollar currently “on the rocks” and continuing to lose value, countries of the world may indeed lose all confidence in America’s ability to right itself economically at some point. Especially with a $16,000,000,000,000 DEBT hanging over our heads, and should Obama get reelected, it will be at least $20,000,000,000,000 by the end of 2016. With no end in sight.

In other words, the END of America as we know it. If indeed Obama gets reelected and his Socialist/Marxist/Communist agenda gets fully implemented. In other words, adios Estados Unidos. Goodbye U.S. Hello BANANA REPUBLIC!

Yet it doesn’t seem to faze liberals. They obviously seek “instant gratification” much like drug addicts strung out on black tar heroin. Liberalism encompasses a “ME ME ME” mentality. Even though they realize their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would suffer enormous hardship trying to pay down the humongous DEBT their ‘Dear Leader’ Obama has shackled on them.

By voting for Barack Obama the liberals are essentially applauding their own destruction. What is even more disturbing is that they are apparently more than willing to enslave their own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in order to implement Obama’s socialist agenda.

America has already experienced terrible hardship under Obama’s first term. Black unemployment is ‘through the roof’ and record numbers of Americans are living in poverty under Obama’s failed policies. Gas and diesel prices are the highest in history. Twenty three million Americans can’t find work. Food Stamp President Obama has put more people on the ‘government dole’ than at any time in America’s history. The U.S. Government now spends over a TRILLION dollars a year on just the welfare system alone! For every person who happens to find a job – eight people end up leaving the workforce altogether. The workforce has the lowest participation rate since the Great Depression if I’m not mistaken. A record number of people are now applying for “Disability”… not because they’re disabled… but they simply CAN’T FIND WORK in Obama’s failed economy. And with a broke Justice System – thanks to a corrupt Eric Holder Jr. – everybody and his uncle is accepted into the disability program without nary a peep of objection to its “watered-down” eligibility requirements. Can’t find a job? The Obama administration is encouraging you to sign up for Food Stamps (hand-out) and they’ll look the other way if you sign up for Disability. Even though you’re not disabled. And they’ll give you a free “cell phone” so you can call them and thank them for being so generous. Don’t worry, taxpayers are picking up the tab. It’s an Obama world.

The Obama administration is desperately trying to get more and more people dependent on the government, until the government “rules their lives” and “controls their destinies.” That’s why they call them: Obamatrons. Pawns (Democrats) who are controlled by government elitists in an Obama world. Which is the same thing as saying: Pawns controlled by Vladimir Putin in communist Russia. You get my point.

    Romney/Ryan 2012

    • WordsFailMe

“thanks to a corrupt Eric Holder Jr. – everybody and his uncle is accepted into the disability”

And it turns out that most of the people on disability ARE Eric Holders uncles!

      Thanks code!

  • Romney was my first choice.

And with the way things look today, this is why.

I wanted to win the game, not the half.

Great shout-out for TRS from Rush today, referencing this exact Halperin/Rose conversation. In the second hour at 18 minutes for the videocam and 17 minutes for the audio version. Nice.

  • bobemakk

Wow, this is great, another Obama fan is now coming out against him.
