The interesting thing about this report is that Fox News reporter John Roberts says that if the wood for the fret boards that Gibson imported had been a finished piece, having been manufactured in India, it would have been completely legal to import. But Gibson wanted to manufacture the fret boards here in America, which raises the question if this raid was about sending more American manufacturing jobs overseas from a company that is run by a Republican:

UPDATE (Dan): Gibson’s CEO Henry Juszkiewicz seems convinced there is indeed a political motive behind the feds’ recent raid of his company: “There’s no doubt we’re being persecuted.”

UPDATE #2 (Dan): Well, isn’t this interesting: Looks like Juszkiewicz will be in attendance tomorrow for Obama’s jobs speech. I wonder if Obama will have Richard Trumka and Jimmy Hoffa usher him to his seat.

Please indulge me for a moment here. This is the kind of stuff I deal with in my local newspaper in North Michigan. I am responding to the quote at the beginning from a hardcore union lefty. Anybody ever talk to one of those? His name is “Jax” :-)

    “Republicans literally hate America…” (Jax)

Huh? Wouldn’t it make more sense that those who would “fundamentally change” our nation are much more likely to hate it? We don’t want to transform it sir, we want to restore it. See the difference?

How will the nonstop funneling of our tax dollars to unions help anything? Why should “stimulus” dollars go only to unions, and no others need apply? What about the other 90% of working folks? Engage in blatant self-interest much?

I realize that you think Keynesian economics works, but as we’ve seen, it does not. America became the greatest nation on Earth with Adam Smith economics not Keynesian economics. It’s that type of thinking that caused the great depression to be so great for so long. Why not try things that have historically worked? We have a difference of opinion on that…bigtime. You can’t unleash the power of entrepreneurial businesses and individuals in this country by tying it down like it were Gulliver and you the Lilliputians, then demand that Gulliver get up and get to work.

Unions are increasingly globalists. I want folks in office, and deeds of those in office, to strengthen America. If a business is hamstrung here and regulated within an inch of it’s life, as they increasingly are, might that be why they move? If you were in captivity, wouldn’t you also try to escape? For Gosh sakes, let business do what business does, create jobs and wealth. Stop beating them over the head with crazy ideology and massive regulation that stymies growth?

This seems to be a no-brainer…I guess that’s what it is.

Hey, I figured out how I know what a Gibson Guitar is. It was from watching the old Food Network show $40 Dollars A Day with Rachael Ray. She did an episode in Nashville where she went to a guitar shop and another episode in Memphis where she toured the Gibson factory.

The Travel Channel has been showing reruns and I caught them recently. That’s how I know what a Gibson guitar is!

Martin’s are REALLY pricey, so don’t smash it. Just play some really cool conservative songs on it (Some of Rush’s parodies will do) and that will exercise the liberal demons.

This heavy handedness is, in all probability politically inspired. When the imposter in chief took over Chrysler and G.M. there were about 2000 dealers that were cut from the ranks, look around, you still see many many empty dealerships. Lots and lots of people lost their jobs. Of the 900 or so Chrysler dealerships that got the pink slip almost all of them were GOP contributors. Very few Obama contributors.
As to be expected, the media did no reporting on this situation but the information is available, mainly from industry sources. Look up Chrysler dealership closing/political contributions.

Well, at any rate, it’s irrelevant that they are an American company. If they’re breaking the law, they should be made to comply. If they are not, they are being persecuted. If they are engaging in the same business practices as others who are NOT being investigated, then they are being unduly targeted. In the end, that’s what this report was saying.

    • http://www.envisionliberty.weebly.com/ Mike Leavitt

First of all I disagree wholeheartedly with the premise that they are breaking the law. Why do you assume a law has been broken?

Having said that, what gives the Fed gov the right to shut down a company without due process to “investigate?” So the company goes out of business and they gov finds no wrong doing? Isn’t that the definition of presumed guilt?

Also – the question remains, why is only Gibson being investigated? They are a non-union shop with a Republican owner. Can you say capricious?

Finally – why is it the Feds job to investigate and criminalize people with international (in this case, Indian) law? So should we charge Chinese people who are in America and have a second baby?

Sorry – this is wrong on so many levels. Get the Fed out of our lives!! PLEASE people, read a book. (Start with the Federalist Papers) The Feds are not our friends. They are the enemies of liberty. The purpose of America is an experiment in local, representative government, governed by the people. Not a Public Class dictating to the people how to conduct business. Wake up, because you’re next.

What about apple paying chinese slave labor fifteen cents per iPad?

        • http://www.envisionliberty.weebly.com/ Mike Leavitt

I don’t know what that means? If it takes one minute to assemble an iPad, then fifteen cents per item seems reasonable.

But the other question is, compared to what? If Apple didn’t pay the Chinese fifteen cents per iPad those same Chinese would be off selling drugs or prostituting themselves. A country needs sweat shops so it’s people can build the skills necessary for higher paying jobs. it’s the same thing here in America, we just have the advantage of being uber-rich so we can start people at a higher wage. Having an American company, in China, paying employees the going rate for labor does more for US relations than Joe Biden at his stupid “good-will” tour ever could.

So no, I don’t think the Fed government should decide how much companies should pay people to do a job. That’s the company’s business, not the Feds. And I don’t think the Fed should (in this case, arbitrarily) enforce someone else’s law.

        • Anonymous

True enough. I wonder what would happen if Americans started to refuse Chinese goods built on the sweat of children?

          1. iPads would cost $2000 each.
          2. There would be a lot of starving families in China without their kids bringing home the money they count on.

Unintentional consequences. Not sure what we should do about it, but clearly there are many ethical implications of doing business in China that just don’t sit well with me.

And don’t get me started on what Biden said.

Mike, re-read my post please. I said “If they’re breaking the law, they should be made to comply.” IF. I assume nothing at all, and only ask that the law be enforced equally and fairly.

We live in a nation of laws, if a law has been broken by Gibson, they should not be allowed to do so, and neither should others who do the same. If they are being singled out, it’s flat-out wrong.

It would not surprise me if they are being targeted for political reasons, but I’ll not be played for a pawn, and I’m fighting hard against knee-jerk reactionism. We cannot assume that only Gibson is being targeted without more information, nor can we assume that they are not. We’re just speculating.

I hear what you’re saying, and I appreciate your point that we might be wise to give the authorities the benefit of the doubt. I just simply disagree, here’s why:

The government has just stolen (oh, I mean confiscated) one million dollars worth of supplies on to investigate Gibson’s wood. This is after the Fed’s stole over $100,000 of material in 2009. From everything I’ve read, Gibson still doesn’t know exactly what it’s being charged with. (The speculation is that it is an Indian law that isn’t even being enforced by India, but that is only speculation.) – Where’s due process?

I agree we are a nation of laws, but we are also a nation of due process. Gibson could receive the death penalty (go out of business) and then be found innocent.

Also, when does the Fed just get to come and trample on someone’s property to protect a tree in India? Seriously? This is outside of it’s authority in every way.

One other point. This is the same Federal Government who purposely murdered a Border Patrol agent because they allowed guns to be sold to Mexican drug dealers. this is one 1960’s mantra I believe in:

          QUESTION AUTHORITY.

          • Anonymous

..and now the shooting in Carson City NV with an AK47. Did that gun come from the batch the DOJ so “cleverly” put into Mexican criminal hands?

            • http://www.envisionliberty.weebly.com/ Mike Leavitt

I’m not sure on your point. Are you saying that the government didn’t purposely allow drug runners to get weapons and those weapons weren’t used to kill a Border Patrol agent? Or are you just mocking to mock with no real purpose. (I’m ok with that, just let us know so we all know you’re just the guy in the back of the class who think everything’s a joke.)

I am shocked at the depths to which the O administration is going to unevenly administer their points of view with little regard for the law. They are using an obscurity here and nitpicking to make their point, which appears to be more out of their commie/ 1960’s hippie playbook, that it’s OK to “get” the “man” as in successful Republican nonunion businessman. All of the nonsensical and cutesy replies notwithstanding, if a crime has been committed, why are there no charges? Is it just an attempt to burden the company into ruin? That sort of political chicanery is the standard MO for this corruption sodden administration and is quite plausible.
