This Senatorial debate between Scott McAdams, Joe Miller, and Lisa Murkowski lasts for around an hour and is actually rather interesting.

That was very interesting indeed. I have not seen all that many candidate debates in my time. Maybe ten since 2004? I didn’t really care about politics before that election so I never wasted my time on stuff like this.
The moderator of this particular debate was probably the most even handed moderator I’ve seen. The first question was a “gotcha” for all three. After that, if he had a bias for one over another I couldn’t tell.
As for substance? Whew. McAdams is a typical Democrat who had his talking points down pat. He seemed nervous but he did good getting them out. Alaska is a “young, infrastructure poor state”. Got it. The reference to standing in the frozen food isle was a little bizarre, but the guy was nervous so probably thru out some talking point that would have made some sense in another context. I hope.
Earmarks. I have to give that one to Lisa. She did a piss poor job of explaining it, but I think she did a better job than Miller tried to do. I watched an interview with Jim Inhofe a few months ago where he tried to explain why the whole earmark debate is a red herring. Lisa used that term, but she didn’t explain it as well as Inhofe. All an earmark is is Congress specifying where already appropriated money will be spent. Eliminating earmarks will not do anything to control spending.
Inhofe explained that any money not designated through specific earmarks by Congress just goes to the administration to be spent however the administration sees fit. The problem is not earmarks, but the spending bills that allocate so much money that Congress critters then fight over to spend. So earmarks are a problem because they incentivize excessive spending, but eliminating earmarks won’t tackle the underlying problem. The money will still get spent. It’s one of those distinctions-without-a-difference type of things.
All three were a total failure on immigration. The Democrat quoted Ronald Reagan. Lisa channeled her inner liberal with the whole East Germany/wall crap. I don’t even remember what Miller said but I wasn’t all that impressed.
The bottom line for me was that Miller won it. McAdams was OK, and he’ll probably get a lot of Dem votes but he’s in way over his head. Lisa was terrible from start to finish. Boy, she can look demonic when she’s angry and she was angry a lot during that debate. Her eyebrows can really arch.
Miller won’t win. Every time he talked I found myself agreeing with him but I hated his manner. Actually, it’s really all about the beard. I’m that shallow I guess. Why is his beard like that? Can’t the man grow a real beard? Does he trim it to look like he just forgot to shave that morning? It’s not quite stubble, not quite a beard. What kind of man grows a beard like that? Grow a beard or shave.
I’m awful. But that beard is pathetic.
If you’re shallow enough to vote against the beard, a vote against the hag for being ugly AND hateful seems pretty appropriate.
That’s a good point! I really hate myself for it, but I really think if he loses it will be because of that beard. Or pathetic excuse for a beard.
Hopefully, Alaskans are not as shallow as I am.
I will also tell you this, if you meet this man in person and speak with him for a moment, you will be impressed.
He TALKS well (he is a lawyer who went to Harvard). So what he can CON a fool like you. How impressive is that?
Jaynie59, I’m glad you realize you are so shallow. Recognizing your own failings is the first step towards changing them. I hope you are not voting in Alaska and I hope you are better prepared to make a decision before you vote in your home state!
Um, I think she was trying for a little humor in this oh-so-serious and petty picky campaign fight. Lighten up, falling.
Agreed re/ the bad-boy beard. I think the Don Johnson beard thing went out in the 80’s. He’ll have to do something about that when he gets to DC!
he is not going to DC, fool
VOTE for the “fat man?”
Joe might be prettier than Murkowski, but they are BOTH “snakes.”
apparently you never seen a picture of Lincoln. One of the best Presidents our country ever had.. I’m so glad beards are now a factor.
It’s not that Miller has a beard. As I said, the problem is that it’s a pathetic beard. He looks like a 14 year old boy. Either grow a real beard or shave the damn thing.
Some men just shouldn’t grow facial hair. Miller is one of them.
You know, I didn’t even remember the whole “not fit to serve” attack by Lisa at the end of the debate when I posted my first comment. I really hope that says a lot more about me than it does about the average Alaska voter. I really do.
What is your problem?
DUH, “I think I will vote for Miller because he looks cool and has a beard.”
What an idiot.
Hey, have some tolerance. His wife loves his beard that way. Hopefully the state of Alaska’s economic future isn’t riding on the man’s beard.
Nothing wrong with the beard. It’s a good thing to have when you’re hunting in Alaska, because it’s COOOOOOLD IN ALASKA. I like the remark about Abraham Lincoln. He too had a beard. Let’s just be civil about this. Joe’s better looking than all of them, and had the most precise answers. Murkowski looked like she was going to throw water on Joe’s Face and Scott’s as well. She’s meaner than a junkyard dog.
Pitiful we lose an election because of a guy’s beard.
Sarah linked to you twice in a Facebook Note 10 minutes ago.
Gov. Palin linked to this article in her latest Facebook post:
Miller seems to have better ideas and specifics. The IMF is a huge expenditure as well as our aids spending. Im not saying we shouldn’t spend on fighting aids, just do it when we can afford it.
The fate of our Great Nation is hanging in the balance, and we are talking about Joe Miller and his beard? I’m sure in the future when we are all standing in the soup line, people like yourself will look back on the way it could have been…………Liberty (includes shaggy beards) or Tyranny (soup lines)…….hmmmm I wonder
I am waiting to hear a moderator at the next debate ask her when she knew one of her staff members was under investigation by the feds for a criminal act(s) and what did she know.
When did she know and what did she know.
And did anyone in Congress tell her about the criminal investigation before or after she knew?
There are a lot of rumors floating around in SE about this and it is the duty of the press to find out about issue more substantial than beards or eyebrows.
I will tell you something else about Lisa. She KNOWS that Joe Miller was not sent the Senate request for financial disclosure. She knows this. The administration admitted that he was the only candidate that they did not send one to and they were waiving the fine yet does that stop Lisa from throwing it in his face? Talk about desperate. It is also very dishonest. She knows that she stands NO chance against him on the issues so she has spent tens of thousands of dollars investigating him.
Many of us know this too (despite the media’s selective reporting) so I’m surprised Joe did not say exactly that to her? “That she knows he wasn’t even sent the form, so WTF is she harangueing him for?”
Damn. I need a piss break know and then. Keep the cimmercials!
Murkowski still doesn’t get it, does she? Claiming that she broke her word and is running as a write-in campaign because she “listened to the people”, “it was a difficult choice”. BS! What happened to listening to the people when we VOTED HER OUT?
She only listens to what she wants to hear. Period.
Huh…..McAdams is making a lot of sense. I hate to say that but it’s true.
Congratulations to the moderator…he was the most impartial moderator I have ever seen in this type of debate! Miller won this debate hands down, he was willing to step outside the regular political hype and give REAL answers. Murkowski was slick, but her record does not back up her words. I would have respected her more if she had let her more liberal views come out. McAdams is not prepared for the job, his answers were scripted and mere party lines. Hope Alaska has the good sense to elect Miller.
McAdams was a LOT better than he’s been given the air and paper time for. His answers were pretty honest if you ask me, certainly not “scripted” in any political fashion.
A lot of people would be a lot more impressed with him if he’d simply been given more exposure and let the people get to know who he is and what he has to say.
Wow…when it comes to defending her sponsorship by federally contracting corporation, Murkowski gets positively livid! Methinks Joe and Scott hit a nerve there!
Are they playing Texas Hold ’em?
Great debate. Joe Miller won hands down! Joe’s the best looking candidate running in Alaska. Why would anyone comment on the beard, when you’ve got a 350 lb. overweight McAdams, and then the ex-Cocaine user Murkowski with her downturned smile, or what she thinks is a smile. JOE MILLER FOR US SENATE IN ALASKA!
There are numerous people with knowledge of the facts that say Lisa knew that one of her staff members was under a criminal investigation by the Feds but that he is still on her payroll.
Why isn’t the press charging forward to get to the bottom of this story.
Was Senator Murkowski told that one of her staff members was under investigation since the spring of 2009, when was she told this, and why did she not take action to kick this individual off of her staff?
Large amounts of money were at stake and major violation of regulatory laws took place as the story goes.
Why have the outlets who have hounded Joe for three weeks not now turned their focus onto Lisa’s story that will not go away. The cat is out of the bag. Will the media cover this issue or not?
So far the answer is not.
The reason the press isn’t charging forward to get to the bottom of Lisa’s issues is that they endorse her. She is endorsed by Juneau Empire, Anchorage Daily News and Alaska Newspapers Inc. They report what they want us to believe. Simple–and sad–as that.
Am I the only one noticing that guy in Blue just behind Joe? seems every time I see him he is have a negative physical reaction to whatever Joe is saying.
I’ve been in Alaska recently for the first time and I was impressed with the infrastructure in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Understanding that Alaska is a young state I would always hear how backwards Alaska was and I didn’t find that to be the case at all. The highway to Fairbanks is impressive and well maintained. My daughter is a transfer student from the east coast and goes to UAF, a research university, and is very impressed. I would love to live in Alaska, particularly Anchorage. And if I lived in Alaska Joe miller would have my vote.
“Alaska Dispatch artice: Joe Miller,”
It is a lot to read (about four pages) so MOST of you will be too lazy to read the article, but for those of you who MIGHT want to find out more about Mr. Miller (rather than rely on YOUR opinion).
The FACTS seem to support that Joe Miller is a clown, liar, thief (getting FREE money from the government), and QUICK to blame anyone who did not agree with him or who challenged his position.
He has a worn-out wife with I believe 8 children, and Joe looks “pretty good,” yeah (if that is a requirement for SHALLOW voters like many of you). The problem is that his “looks” and his “lawyer” talking BS has allowed him to get this far.
Miller is a con-man.
Read the article and YOU decide, but don’t base your OPINIONS on just the gibberish he has been talking and YOUR need to see a GOP victory.
This man has fed off the government he now wants to reduce in size.
Think about it you idiots.
I KNEW you right-wing MODERATOR snakes would removve my comments, BECAUSE you only allow folks who talk, think and KNOW NOTHING like you on these types of one-sided commentary sites.
Lost in the woods you fools are.
Good answer Lisa… Sarah Palin qua;lified to be president.. As a Gulf Vet, I say if you can not command a ship as captain, should you become an adimral of an entire fleet? The answer is NO… A Gov who quits becuase its to tough to Govern? Now thats not a quality we want for a president.. BUSH, CLINTON and Regan did not quit!
