Iran trying to woo Egypt into forging an alliance

A couple of days ago Iranian President Ahmadinejad visited Egypt for an Islamic conference and apparently used the time to woo Egypt into some kind of alliance between the two countries:

FOX NEWS – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad tried Thursday to entice Egypt into a new alliance that could reshape the turbulent Middle East, speaking of forging “comprehensive” and “unfettered” relations after decades of distrust.

A warming of ties between the two regional heavyweights could have uncomfortable repercussions for the U.S. and its wealthy Gulf allies, giving Iran a foothold to spread its influence in Egypt. In turn, Egypt could gain an avenue to influence the fate of Syria, a key ally of Iran, as well as economic benefits.

The Iranian president arrived in Egypt on Tuesday to attend a two-day Islamic summit hosted by Egypt’s president, Islamist Mohammed Morsi.

Ahmadinejad’s visit is the first by an Iranian president in 30 years and he used it to launch a charm offensive to woo Egyptians and their leadership. He offered to extend cash-strapped Egypt a credit line and investments. He said his government intended to lift visa requirements for Egyptian tourists and businessmen and he gave a lengthy interview to state television.

In a 90-minute news conference on Thursday, he went the farthest in trying to lure Egypt into a strategic alliance, using flowery language to project an image of two nations — which haven’t had diplomatic ties since 1979 — on the brink of an alliance that would bring them glory and prosperity.

“It is a divine gift to me and the people of Iran that I received the opportunity to visit Egypt,” he told the news conference, held at the residence of Iran’s chief of mission in Egypt, an opulent mansion in Cairo’s upscale Heliopolis district.

He said he expected the volume of bilateral trade to reach $20 billion annually a decade from now and anticipated that many of the eight to 10 million Iranians who holiday abroad every year will come to Egypt.

He dodged a question on whether Iran would be willing to share its nuclear technology with Egypt, saying only that Tehran would have no objections to cooperating with Egypt in “technological, scientific and technical” fields.

“Who deserves to benefit from our science more than our brothers (in Egypt),” he said.

Egypt was once closely allied to Iran and its former ruling shah. The two countries severed relations after the 1979 Islamic Revolution brought rule by Shiite clerics in Iran and Egypt offered refuge to the deposed shah. Ahmadinejad’s visit to Al-Azhar on Tuesday brought him not far from a grandiose Cairo mosque where the shah — despised by Iran’s current rulers — is buried.

Relations further deteriorated after Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel.

“We love Egypt and no one can take this love away from us,” the Iranian president said Thursday. “Even if relations are cut for a hundred years, no one can make us forget each other. It is a love that comes from the heart and has historic roots.”

  • Shi’a and Sunni, side by side. After they defeat their mutually targeted enemy they will turn on each other. How do I know? 1,400 years of history, that’s how.'a%E2%80%93Sunni_relations
Q: Which side is Obama on? And on which side is Hillary?

    • Conniption Fitz

Yep – yesterday on Islam’s holy day in Pakistan, 10 killed and 20 injuried in bomb near Mosque. There is almost a bomb a day in Pakistan…in the war between Sunnis and Shiites. Bombs occur most frequently on Fridays, at mosques, weddings, funerals, courthouses, police stations, schools, hospitals, post offices and political gatherings.

      • Sober_Thinking

        How peaceful of them.

    • which side in more tolerable for the rest of us to live under?

I reckon Shia would be more pleasant than a sunni. Never liked those Saudis But Ahmadinejad looks like a joyful fellow you can have a beer with.

    • Betsey_Ross

Which side is Obama on? Hillary? That’s easy, not ours.

Never mind. As it turns out it was orangeone who flagged an innocent comment of mine proving her pettiness. Pathetic…..

      Hey Mike,

Thought of you today when the Marine gave his glove to Chris Kyles wife during his service.
Reminded me of the whole “carry” thing.

      Hope youre good.

Obama and congress give money, tanks, and planes to Morsi and Morsi invites Ahmadinejad over to feast on THEIR new friendship.
Obama, this looks like a case of ‘money can’t buy you love’, and your Cairo speech is long forgotten.

    • Sober_Thinking

      Spot on.

Axis of evil… watching history and Bible prophecy play out right before our eyes.

So, we already gave Iran one or more of our stealthy drones… but now, through Egypt, they’re going to get our F-16 and Abrams technology too? How foolish that? STOP the shipments to Egypt and cut them off! NOW!

I’d love for someone to intelligently dispute that Obama is not a Muslim… because it seems every little thing he does helps Muslims and the MB and hurts Israel.

Obama is on the wrong side of Bible prophecy – he is aiding the enemies of God. America better correct this… FAST!

“Axis of evil…watching history and Bible prophecy play out right before our eyes.”

Did you ever think it would be revealed in such an obvious way? It exposes the atheists and the liberal deniers of a supreme being as the loons that history ultimately will show they always were. The final revelation will be exposed in away there can be no doubt of who are believers and who are the non-believers as history resolves its goal.

      • Sober_Thinking

It’s pretty amazing to see everything play out like this. God said it… we should believe it.

  • I am personally shocked that Washington has remained silent on this issue. It’s not like the Obama admin 2 sit back & do nothing while major events that threaten us in the middle east are occurring

    • notsofastthere

Jake, the poor guy has soo much to handle here in the good ole USA. I mean he is concerned about Gay’s in the Military and the Boy Scouts, and good citizens who own guns that can hurt people, entertaining foreign enemies while going off the diet Michelle gave him, and telling the world how bad we are, and stealing more money from working people. He’s got to get his Marxist cabinet together – come on! give the guy a break already.

  • sjmom

Hatred comes from Satan who steals, kills and destroys and its amazing how much hatred there is in the Middle East. Not only do they hate Christians and Jews they hate each other and this is why there will never be a lasting peace.

  • Bucketheadbaptist

So I guess we’ll know where those F-16s are going to end up now.

    • PovrlaChasse

So right. That is why Amadamnutjob went to Egypt. He needs those American jets for use and for parts. All or most of the military equipment we send to Egypt will wind up in Iran.

Egypt is not currently being attacked, and is only talking about attacking Israel. They have no current need for all the military assistance Obama is dumping on them. That will make it easier for Iran to buy it up. Plus, with Obama, they can always get more free stuff anyway should they need it, or just get Obama to fight the war for them.

All that Obama and Hillary have accomplished in the M.E. is to start wars killing hundreds of thousands, topple moderate governments, empower a more radicalized version of Islam across Africa, and create more Iranian allies in the region thus increasing Iran’s influence and reach.

Great job guys. Wonderful. Hillary really is the best SoS we have ever had. Of course, that is according to Al Jeezera, Al Qaeda, and the Muslim Brotherhood, but who cares about the details?

  • Bucketheadbaptist

Which should probably make me start wondering… WHICH country is supposed to be supplying weapons to Israel’s Enemies?

That was Russia right? Gog & Magog?

We seem to be trying really hard.

  • sDee

Egypt’s people have been forced into a sustenance diet by the government.

    We send them F-16s.

    They go begging to Iran.

Eat Less, Egypt’s Government Tells Its People

“The [Egyptian] government subsidizes fuel and foodstuffs — things it can’t afford — but it also can’t afford to unwind those subsidies politically, so it is really in a very serious situation,”

  • I guess Obama’s “smart” power is really taking off now. At this rate, not even the Israelis will want to be seen near us. Hey, but things can only get better with Kerry at the State Department and Hagel running the Pentagon, right? Get ready for $8 a gallon gas, folks. At this rate, and with Obama and his minions STILL refusing to drill in the United States, we will all be running our cars on air soon. Hey, elections DO have consequences.

  • Myptofvu

Really how hard is it going to be to convince Egypt to align with Iran?

(Transcript) We have a lot in common…You hate Jews, We hate Jews, You hate America, We hate America, You love Obama, We love Obama

  • anneinarkansas

Obama will assist both of them.

    • PovrlaChasse

That is the big question. Is Obama giving these jets to Egypt knowing that they will go to Iran? Is Obama indirectly giving jets to Iran. It wouldn’t surprise me. He has already given them virtually all of our drone technology, why not give them jets too.

It seems clear which side Obama is on vis-a-vis Israel. Let’s see…. we refuse weapons to Israel, but give free weapons to Egypt who is friendly with Iran…hmmm

  • Nukeman60

I’m thinking we could do much better if we fire all our foreign policy experts and hire Bible prophesy scholars. That would tell us much more about what’s about to happen in the Middle East than all those idiots in this administration could ever imagine.

    We would be better served.
