There’s a lot of angst on social media over comments that WH Press Secretary Sarah Sanders made yesterday regarding Putins interest in Bill Browder and Trump’s consideration of it.
Here’s the exchange:
NYT's Maggie Haberman asks @PressSec if Pres. Trump supports idea of Russian authorities questioning Americans who they purport were involved in Bill Browder's "crimes"; Sanders says topic was discussed between Putin & Trump, but "there wasn't a commitment made on behalf of U.S." pic.twitter.com/mBnp3VcdUx

Putin wants to question former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul on the issue of Bill Browder and Sanders confirms that it did come up in Trump’s meeting with Putin. But she says there was no commitment made. She did suggest, however, that Trump would consult his National Security Team on the issue, which raised alarms among some – including Bill Browder.
Here’s an interview he gave on Fox News last night:
Jonah Goldberg tweeted, that should Trump concede on this issue, it would be an unmitigated outrage:
If they prosecute Browder out of some quid-pro-quo it would be an unmitigated outrage. https://t.co/3OjYShLxvj

And others are suggesting that even the consideration of this is an outrage. But as Fox News pointed out in the above clip, the State Department has been very clear that Russian claims on this are absurd, even though they can’t speak for the White House:
Some on Twitter believe that nothing is really going to happen with this and the outrage over Sander’s answer is over the top:
They're not handing over Browder or McFaul, guys. Especially not Browder, because he'd be in mortal danger.

I think Mandel is probably right on this. However I agree with Browder and others that this should be a non-starter, just like sending Gulen to Turkey is a non-starter. I expect Sanders to come back today or tomorrow and affirm that nothing is going to happen with this and will reserve my outrage until I hear otherwise.
