Larry Pratt On Fox News Sunday: Gun-Free Zones Are Murder Magnets

“Every one of our mass murders in our country has occurred in places where guns were prohibited.”

On Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace interviewed Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America, regarding renewed gun control talk in the media and Washington on the anniversary of the Newtown school shooting.

“The legislation that is on the books is lethal. It is killing people. All of these gun free zones are murder magnets, and we’ve simply got to get rid of them. It’s an illusion to think that somehow we’re going to be safer because we can’t have a gun in a particular area, because the bad guy is gonna have a gun.”

Wallace mentions polling that shows that a vast majority of Americans want expanded background checks. Pratt says he disputes the polls, and particularly the idea that the polling included gun owners. He points out that the politicians in Washington must not believe the polling either because they didn’t pass any new legislation, and were not hearing the same interest directly from their constituents.

In response to the President’s Weekly Address, Pratt says the President is “looking through the wrong end of the telescope,” and reiterates that the best defense is to allow law-abiding Americans to protect themselves with the guns they have a constitutional right to bear.

Finally, Pratt refers to the idea of preventing unstable or criminal individuals from carrying guns as a preventive measure against violence is silly, and adds “We don’t like the message that we oughta be disarmed as a method of fighting crime.” As to those who would do harm with a gun, Pratt has a simple answer:

“We oughta put ’em in jail!”
