Letterman: I only apologized to Sarah Palin so I could keep making fun of her

David Letterman is a joke that’s just not funny anymore. And apparently not sincere in his apologies either:

FOX NEWS – David Letterman was in mea culpa mode in a sit-down chat with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday night. But while he apologized profusely for the pain he had caused his wife when an extramarital affair with a young staffer was revealed, he was less remorseful when asked about his awkward sex joke about Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter, Willow. …

But Letterman said the only reason he apologized to Sarah Palin after he was roundly criticized for making a sex joke on “Late Night” about Willow, then 14, was so that he could continue to make jokes about the former Vice Presidential candidate.

“I felt like Sarah Palin was somebody I wanted to be able to continue to make fun of,” he said. “And I felt like if I don’t apologize … I will not be able to go forward [with that].”

I went back and read my short writeup on his apology to Palin. Turns out I never thought he apologized in the firsts place:

David Letterman spent the better part of 10 minutes trying to clear up the mess he made regarding his Sarah Palin jokes. He primarily defended himself, insisting that he would never advocate child rape or promiscuity. He never actually apologized, but then who thought he would? It was more about damage control (while getting more laughs) than about the insensitivity he displayed when joking about Palin’s daughter getting knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.
