MORE liberal nuttiness! In this edition we have a liberal writer who says she freaks out in fear whenever she sees someone dressed up in the American flag!
@cmclymer @SheriffClarke Yes! Related: I've been thinking about who gets to define patriotism and "American values" & how/why that's become code for white supremacy
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
This is only true among the fringe of the alt-right. Unfortunately, it’s getting approval from Trump allies, but it’s still a fringe.
Then she hits us with this:
@cmclymer @SheriffClarke Like when I see someone in head to toe US flag now, it might as well be the confederate flag and that sucks.
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
Wow. What a sad life this person must lead. Considering how patriotic Americans are and how much they display the flag, she must get triggered like Sideshow Bob stepping on rakes.
@amywestervelt @cmclymer @SheriffClarke I had this conversation with my sister this morning, I almost cringe now when I see the flag. White supremacy disguised as patriotism.
— aboleyn (@aboleyn) May 20, 2017
What?!
@aboleyn @cmclymer @SheriffClarke Fear. Fear is the first feeling I have when I see the American flag prominently displayed on someone's person or vehicle. That's terrible
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
This is just insane. The vast majority of people who display the American flag are just patriotic, not racists. I guarantee you a lot of those people are minorities too. But this crazy lib is probably too busy cringing and cowering in debilitating fear to notice.
@JimmyMcSavage @aboleyn @cmclymer @SheriffClarke Or maybe I'm just not a white guy. But who cares what the rest of America experiences, right?
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
I’m an American guy of Mexican descent. Not my mexperience. At all.
@insighthr @aboleyn @cmclymer @SheriffClarke Some of them are my relatives. You're missing the point–the flag isn't the problem it's the people like you who have made it stand for hate
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
She cringes in fear of the flag when her family displays it? What?
Of course, snarky conservatives responded with what she probably considers flag-based hate crimes:
@amywestervelt @JimmyMcSavage @aboleyn @cmclymer @SheriffClarke Yes the American flag is very scary to well-off coastal white women. I feel your pain.

@amywestervelt @JimmyMcSavage @aboleyn @cmclymer @SheriffClarke Or maybe you just need help? Signed, a brown female immigrant from India. P.S.:The US flag from my naturalization ceremony hangs on my door.

@amywestervelt @aboleyn @cmclymer @SheriffClarke There is flea market near me that has actual rebel flags everywhere.
I am a gay Jew who wears a kippah daily.
Your fantasy fear is silly. pic.twitter.com/TueMUyJZmM— Chad Felix Greene (@chadfelixg) May 20, 2017
She’s tried to explain her phobia of U.S. flags with this further clarification:
There's a word for countries where blind, uncritical support of the government and all its trappings is expected & it's not democracy
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
But that doesn’t explain anything – I agree fully with this tweet, which is why some Trump zombies annoy me, but I don’t cringe in fear of the flag.
Patriotism doesn't mean never criticizing dear leader. If I weren't patriotic I WOULD leave. I stay bc I want US to live up to potential
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
Again, absolutely true – and was true in the era of Obama too.
Flag wavers out, proving my point and missing it at the same time. The flag is SUPPOSED to stand for good, today it mostly stands for hate
— Amy Westervelt (@amywestervelt) May 20, 2017
No, that’s what it stands for in her diseased mind.
