Mississippi church refused to allow black couple to marry in the church

Of all the stories I expected to hear about, this wasn’t one of them. And the sad part about it is that this Southern Baptist congregation has to wear the shame of racism of a small minority in the church, including a spineless pastor:

According to USA Today, the pastor said he was simply trying to be a peacemaker:

The Rev. Stan Weatherford was asked why he gave into the wishes of the members who didn’t want the wedding held at the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.

“I was just trying to think about a win-win,” he said Sunday to the Clarion-Ledger. “The thing is, I’m a peacemaker, and sometimes because I’m a peacemaker it gets me in trouble. The thing about it is this: I love the people of our church and that’s the bottom line.”

I’m not buying the ‘peacemaker’ argument – I call BS. My suspicion is that this pastor has something to hide and the people who complained about the black couple marrying in the church know about it, and that’s why this pastor caved to them. I don’t know why else a pastor would allow the reputation of his church to become labeled as racist, especially in this political environment. Just doesn’t make sense.

Because of the absurdity of this pastor’s actions, I hereby award this pastor and his church the triple facepalm award:
