Morning Joe Panel: Wendy Davis Story Fake But True

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe early today, the panel discussed the growing controversy over the accuracy and truthfulness of claims made by Texas Gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis. The segment has a scare chyron across the bottom of the screen that laments “GUBERNATORIAL RACE GETS UGLY EARLY”. Oh fret and bother.

Mika Brzezinski tells us that Republicans have “pounced” on the “discrepancies”, and then first tosses to NBC News political reporter Kasie Hunt, who immediately brings up what is sure to be the talking point of the week, the “basic narrative”. The basic narrative is correct, you see, even if the details were wrong.

This NBC political reporter spends the remainder of the segment blatantly campaigning for Davis, bringing up the “basic narrative” narrative a second time less than two minutes later. “Some of the details are not quite right,” she says. But “the basic narrative” is “true.”

Donny Deutsch and Willie Geist are also quick to “pounce” on this defense, and Mika takes the cake when she says “so she just exaggerated” with a tone of voice that makes it clear that exaggerating is no big deal and everyone should just shut up and vote for Wendy immediately. Which is pretty well in keeping with MSNBC’s position on the matter to date.
