Netanyahu asks French President to back off with UN resolution to divide Israel

The French are trying to force a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians in the form of a UN resolution. According to CBN News, the resolution calls for dividing Jerusalem and shrinking Israel down to their 1967 borders giving them no control of Judea and Samaria in two years:

“…French resolution in the U.N. Security Council that would use the 1967 Middle East borders — the borders that include a divided Jerusalem and no Israeli control of territories in biblical Judea and Samaria won in the Six Day War — as part of a two-year timetable for talks. …

The French proposal calls for a full Israeli pullout from the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) within two years. It also calls for Israel to fully recognize a state of Palestine. The proposal mentions nothing about Israel’s insistence that Israel be recognized as a Jewish state, nor does it mention land swaps to allow for large Jewish communities currently in the territory to be under Israeli sovereignty.

Of course Netanyahu is not a big fan of this and pretty much told the French president to back off, telling him the resoluation would backfire:

HAARETZ – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke several days ago on the phone with French President Francois Hollande and asked him to halt the French initiative being promoted by the country’s foreign minister Laurent Fabius.

The French initiative incorporates a United Nations Security Council resolution that sets a two-year timetable for achieving a permanent agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, which includes a Palestinian state along the 1967 lines and land swaps.

“I told Hollande that I think this move is a negative one and will backfire,” Netanyahu told reports after meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Rome. “Such a move is contrary to a peace agreement, it will thwart all future negotiations and bring about an escalation,” Netanyahu said. He added: “Hollande listened, and I don’t want to say what he said, but I said things very clearly.”

CBN News notes this as well:

President Obama has publicly supported using the 1967 lines as a starting point for negotiations, but U.S. officials would prefer not to have to exercise a Security Council veto. They’re also reluctant to be seen making moves that would appear to be intervening in Israel’s elections, scheduled for March 17, 2015.

Yeah we all know Obama would probably support this plan with open arms. And it just happens to coincide with his last two remaining years as president.

But I’m sure it will be vetoed by someone if it gets any traction and here’s hoping it will be the US.
