Jonah Goldberg has been one of the most principled voices against Donald Trump, but unlike the mindless, zombie-like Trump cult, he’s actually pretty honest about it. So when he believes something that helps Trump even though he dislikes the guy, he still says it publicly!
No wonder we lose all the time:
Goldberg, who is mostly known for his prolific tweeting, makes a really good point about Trump’s tax avoidance – as long as he did it legally, it shouldn’t bother conservatives. After all, isn’t that what many of us are advocating? The issue for Trump is that politically, it looks bad for him that he’s railing on everyone else for not paying taxes, and then he does it himself. You can’t go on a moral crusade when you yourself are sinning against the virtues you espouse.
Of course, tribe-minded Trump-zombies will see this as victory, instead of a sign of Goldberg’s integrity. They could never do the same and honestly criticize Trump.
He also has a really good way of putting the reason for the maze of tax laws – “complexity is a subsidy.” Really, that sums up so much – the wealthy and powerful are able to buy politicians and bend the tax laws to benefit them, while the rest of us get screwed. For a pretty bright guy, it’s a shame he’s so incapable of putting on pants.
