Some police organizations are coming out to denounce the rhetoric from President Trump that sounded like he was encouraging police brutality.

Some might say he was joking. Others might say that he was specifically talking about MS12 gang members, or murderers.

I know. Everything’s a big joke with Trump. But people really are dying because of their interactions with police. Hearing cops loudly applaud any joke about police brutality is pretty dispiriting. I’m definitely pro-police, but things like this give me pause.

I mean it’s not as if we’re experiencing some enormous resurgence in crime – in actuality, most crimes are at historical lows. Regular, lawful, decent policing has worked. Let’s not encourage brutality that breaks the social compact between the community and the police. Not a lot of good comes from that…
