STAKES RAISED: U.S.-Backed Syrian Rebels Fire Missiles At Russian Helicopter On Search & Rescue Mission

The Free Syrian Army claims to have fired an anti-tank missile at a Russian helicopter that was searching for their downed pilots from this morning’s major incident where a Russian plane was shot down by Turkish fighters.

The Independent reports that U.K. based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has the details on the incident. The group told Reuters that the helicopter did not come down inside rebel territory, unlike the plane this morning.

Instead it made an emergency landing in an area controlled by Assad’s regime.

The Free Syrian Army has weapons from the United States, and are among the groups the U.S. government has backed against Assad.

The insurgent group is among the recipients of US Tow missiles, among other armaments, designed to bolster it against regime forces.

Right Scoop will continue to cover the developing situation between Turkey and Russia as events develop.
