The newest hot rhetorical point to try to exonerate Trump Jr.’s nutty decision to get Putin’s help to defeat Hillary has gone down in flames.
That’s because the Secret Service is shooting down Jay Sekulow’s talking point that the Russian meeting couldn’t have been “nefarious” because the Secret Service would have shut it down.

Now, he should have known better than use such a stupid talking point. The Secret Service aren’t lawyers. They’re there to protect Trump & co. from physical threats, not to protect them from making stupid politically damaging decisions.
Here’s what the Secret Service said in response:
In an emailed response to questions about Sekulow’s comments, Secret Service spokesman Mason Brayman said the younger Trump was not under Secret Service protection at the time of the meeting, which included Trump’s son and two senior campaign officials.
“Donald Trump, Jr. was not a protectee of the USSS in June, 2016. Thus we would not have screened anyone he was meeting with at that time,” the statement said.
But Sekulow is bright enough to know this. He’s using his intellect to obscure the truth rather than reveal it. Because that’s what the Trump brand does.
