We’re only 5 months away from the last election, but Texas Governor Greg Abbott is already getting ready for next year’s elections with a big endorsement of Ted Cruz for US Senate:
I'm making my own political announcement today…. https://t.co/ca98Sa2X8y

Here’s the actual endorsement:
AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today announced his support for Ted Cruz for Senate in the upcoming 2018 election. In endorsing Senator Cruz, Governor Abbott issued the following statement:
“Since Ted Cruz was elected to the U.S. Senate, he has done everything he said he’d do for Texans, and more. From opposing gun control legislation, leading the effort to increase border security, and now spearheading the charge to confirm a constitutionalist to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court, Ted is a fighter who is getting things done for Texas. Voters overwhelmingly rejected Democrat policies in 2016, and I’m confident Texans will continue that streak in 2018.”
This comes just after news that Cruz will have a new Democratic challenger in his race for US Senate – which isn’t really news because there’s almost always a Democratic challenger in the general election.
What would be news is if there was an establishment Republican challenger to Cruz in 2018, which was most certainly threatened last year. In fact part of me wonders if this early endorsement by Abbott is to help ward off any establishment Republicans from engaging in an ugly nomination fight just to get Cruz’s conservative voice out of Congress.
Either way, you couldn’t ask for a better endorsement. Abbott is a class act and a very strong conservative Republican whose voice needs to be heard at the highest levels of our government.
