The new American dream: How the Entitlement Society just sucks you in and keeps you

CBS 21 has done a great investigation into our entitlement society:

We’ve all heard the line that America is becoming an entitlement society or welfare state, with half of U.S. households now receiving some type of government benefit. But a CBS 21 News investigation has taken that stat one step further to show you how much people are actually getting for free.

Common Sense seems to be not so common…however, I came across this clip yesterday and I think you might like to hear a Conservative Approach….

Excellent video. I forwarded it on to several of my friends. The socialist system is unsustainable and it will collapse. I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for 5 years. This is all going to end badly, and the sad truth is we will never be able to stop it.

      • Sober_Thinking

I’m with you… I want my lost 4 years back. I’ve never been this consistently apprehensive and depressed.

But I do believe we will stop it. There are many positive signs to combat the negative ones (the 2010 freshman class for instance).

God is in control… and I believe He will save this nation, as long as we don’t give up hope and keep our eyes, ears, and hearts on Him.

Hang in there. I don’t hear the fat lady singing yet. 🙂

        • mikeinidaho

God helps those who help themselves. Please don’t just sit back and wait for God to save us. Get up and work to save yourself, your family, your friends, your neighbors and your country. god will hlp us as we help ourselves. Store up food, fuel, ammo and encourage others to do so. And finally, PRAY! God will hear us and will help us!

We have been blessed with the tools, the minds, the information and the free will to act, attack and defend.

The ball is now in our court.

          • Sober_Thinking

While I understand and agree with the sentiment of what you’re saying (it’s time for action, be prepared, etc.), I disagree with your implication that God helps those who help themselves… it implies that we can do it without Him.

The Lord repeatedly tells us in His Word to wait upon the Lord. Furthermore, He is strong in our weakness. I place my faith on His wisdom and strength and nothing else.

That being said, sDee said what I would have added. I believe it is time to act and to faithfully, prayerfully act. May the Lord bless our righteous cause.

  • And these are all the people who voted for Obama, and YOU are paying for it. And what will these people do when we end up like Greece? What will happen when all the government benefits, paychecks, subsidies, and entitlements end? You will see social unrest like we’ve never seen before, probably worse than the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. This is what happens when you become Europe, when you have now a majority of the people in this country living off of government and fewer people supporting it. As Margaret Thatcher said, you eventually run out of spending other people’s money, and we’re almost there. As they said in the story, this will only change once there is a major crisis. Be prepared for it, because it’s coming, and the social unrest that’s going to come with it will be staggering, especially in the big cities.

…If we don’t stop it and turn it around .

The thing that makes it worse are that a) America hasn’t historically had the stomach for losing… we will have lost our greatness if we come to that point and the despair will be terrible. b) We have grown used to our high standard of living… take that away and people will freak. And c) It’s all contrary to our founding principles… totally against working hard and reaping what we sow… enjoying the fruit of our labors… having the freedoms we have… individuality, where hard work is esteemed and rewarded. If we let the left creep into the cracks and split this country up for digestion, then we will be in for it indeed.

I strongly believe in preparing for the worst and hoping for the best… it looks dark now perhaps… but there is light at the end of it all (as long as Hillary doesn’t get elected). If we elect a Ted Cruz, Allen West… maybe a Sarah Palin or a Michelle Bachman… or any combination of other noted conservatives… then we can turn this puppy around. It’s not too late.

Also, lay up your treasures in Heaven… where moth and rust can’t corrupt it. Trust God… and know He is just and faithful. Rom. 8:28.

  • Sober_Thinking

    Scary as hell.

Are there people that need this? Absolutely. Are there people who abuse it and stay on it for as long as possible? No doubt about it. This whole mess may have started out with good intentions… but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I like the idea of reasonable time limits on benefits.. whether it’s unemployment, food stamps, welfare… any of these. I doubt it was ever the intention of anyone to keep people on this “free” stuff forever… even if it makes good little Democrat voters. It’s simple math that this is unsustainable. Eventually, those who work and pay taxes, will either retire or possibly be fired/layed off as the economy gets worse… and then they may also be stuck on this government crack if they don’t find new work.

And then the other side of the coin… Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Little dick Durbin, Chuck Schumer, etc. all are intentionally destroying America’s economic infrastructure by over-taxing, spending recklessly, printing more money, laying ridiculous regulations on businesses, not passing a budget, wasting the money they steal on Solyndra, etc., Obamacare, corruption, government growth and takeovers of businesses… it goes on and on. That’s why I consider them domestic terrorists. It’s a vicious cycle.

It’s not Biblical to be lazy, especially if you have the means to work… or to steal. It’s not right to suck off the sweat of others’ labor. It’s not right to redistribute money and perpetuate dependency on the government. This is a cancer that will kill this country if it’s not fixed very soon.

  • Nathan Scovell

I am extremely impressed with this news station doing a report like this.

  • Nathan Scovell

I am extremely impressed that this news station would run this story. You would never see this from most of the media. It’s a liberal dream crusher.

    • sDee

It is the liberal dream. All these damn old hippy Che and Mao wannabes like Clinton, Reid and Pelosi in government are getting rich and powerful off white middle calss guilt and church-fed social injustice. They will all be dead and gone when we and our children are left with all the illegals and other assorted marxist proletariat they used to extract our wealth and climb to the top of the political class.

      • 4Hoppes2

The last forty years of the experimental war on poverty and the abject failure of Social Justice have only accomplished the preferential expansion of the State, without one bit of benefit to the health and well being of the family structure. The dignity of the human person has long been sacrificed by the relentless pursuit of an utopian civilization where all human wants, needs, and desires are fulfilled. We have created an increasing number of people so desperate they no longer look to God for their daily bread but to the most criminal, least charitable entity of all, the federal government for their sustenance. Once they drink from the kings cup they become obligated to sing the kings song.

        • sDee

          well said – disturbingly true

  • StrangernFiction

Ironically the State is hardly looking after our welfare.

  • c4pfan

I am not able to see this right now, but it’s things like this that are needed to shine the light of what is going on in this country.

  • bjohnson55

Heaven forbid we would see this piece run on MSNBC, CBS (national news), ABC, CNN…

    • notsofastthere

We have to count our blessings and be thankful we saw it on this site. Now we can forward it to others.

  • RestlessLegs

Maybe, just maybe, we’re going to start to see more stories like this. I work as a freelance TV news reporter. Most TV reporters do NOT make a lot of money (except in larger markets), and reporters often put in long days, depending on the stories each day. In the medium-sized market where I work, the average reporter makes around $30,000. They feel like any person would: Why am I working so hard when people can get these kinds of freebies? I’m going to suggest this story topic next time I’m called in. We’ll see where it goes!

  • Ray

The real issue is, even those who were conservative in values, and had to go on the dole because they lost their jobs, become victims to the lure of not working, and will become angry when someone suggests they should find a job. Submitting resume’s that make you unattractive to employers is fraud, but the liberal machine does not look for that fraud, purposely.

  • notsofastthere

That lady is honest in admitting that it’s hard to get off the government benefist. She wants to be a nurse. I suggest that she may also want to lose a few pounds to be able to care for patients.

  • bjohnson55

I am tired of working so freaking hard day in and day out, losing ground financially, struggling to pay off my mortgage so I can think about retiring as my 401K shrinks and my pay not keeping up with inflation, not being able to send my two boys to college because we cannot afford it and they do not qualify for any assistance because they do not have some kind of exotic skin tone and are legal US citizens. Sound like I am getting a little fed up with this crap? Oh Yea I am…

  • anneinarkansas

    Chilling but true.
A crash may be the only answer.

  • This video proves Ben Franklin right…I will paraphrase: “The best way to help the poor is to make them as uncomfortable in their poverty as possible.”~Ben Franklin

People are not going to leave welfare to live lesser of a life and most especially in a society whose self worth and morality is declining.

  • Kordane

Too many people support welfare because too many people accept the morality of altruism. It’s not enough to say that you are only for altruism when it’s individuals voluntarily doing it, rather than the government doing it, because there is no good answer for why one is good and the other bad – And so statists will use altruism to further their statist agenda, as they have done.

  • objective123

What these folks don’t realize is that any OVERPAYMENT IN BENEFITS, the federal and/or state government can RECOUP the proceeds from any source. That means, if you expect a refund in later years and after an audit that might be from some time ago, they CAN SEIZE YOUR REFUND TO PAY FOR THE OVERPAYMENT OF BENEFITS. Bankruptcy protection can’t stop it.

Also, if you receive unemployment benefits, you are taxed at 10% by the federal govt for these benefits. Free is not free. That is why you become a ward of the state or slave to the system because you are indebted to them.

Dependency is slavery. But here’s the irony: the biggest dependents are on Capitol Hill.
