SO there’s a bunch of people who were upset at the sermon at the Royal Wedding today. It’s because the Rev. Michael Curry, an Episcopalian, mentioned slavery and cited Martin Luther King Jr.
So everyone is using the moment to slam each other up and down:
Kudos to @PB_Curry for both this sermon and for mentioning slavery, reminding everyone watching of both the challenges this world faces re racism and ways we can heal it. #RoyalWedding

Imagine: A biracial American divorcee becomes British royalty, and upon her arrival at the chapel, brings with her a sermon that invokes #MLK, legacy+residue of #slavery & the redemptive, transformative power of #love

That just happened.#BlackGirlMagic #StandByMe #RoyalWedding
Some people loved that they imagine it made the Brits uncomfortable:
Finally, Rev. Curry’s sermon. I’m not sure what’s giving me more life - the fact that he is quoting MLK & slave spirituals in front of people whose ancestors sanctioned slavery, or the incredible side-eyes that all the Brits are giving each other#RoyalWedding pic.twitter.com/d9EqDkLtnd

Others are angry he even mentioned slavery:

I feel terrible for Harry and Meghan… EVERYONE was embarrassed… #royalwedding

Now, this is a dumb opinion. He only cited a negro spiritual from slaves in the antebellum South. He didn’t make it political, he just cited a beautiful song they sang about God’s love.
Here’s the entire sermon – the slavery part comes in at about the 6 minute mark:
But it should be controversial for a much different reason – there were very little mention of Jesus Christ. The reverend cited the Bible a few times, but it was mostly about love that people have for each other.
Now that’s not a bad thing, but a sermon should always focus on one thing – the redemptive act of God in offering Himself as a sacrifice to save all of humanity from their sins. He barely mentioned it.
But everyone is all upset about politics… and that says more about us than anything.
