Trump criticized for report that he called African nations ‘S**T HOLES’

The Washington Post is reporting that Trump was overheard calling African nations and Haiti “sh*thole countries” while reflecting that we need immigrants from places like Norway.

Watch below:

Here’s the context of the quote:

““Why are we having all these people from sh*thole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met yesterday.”

OK, so… I know what most of your knee-jerk reactions will be to this. It’s “OF COURSE THEY’RE SH*THOLES!! GO MERICA!!!” I would caution you against such a reaction.

It’s a partisan tribalist mindset that makes us talk down other countries to make us feel better about our own. How about this – America is the best country not because every other country is a “sh*thole,” but because we’re simply a good country that does good things? Do we really need to crap on every other country to love ours? I think that’s a juvenile and base instinct that we should not feed.

Besides, who knows if it’s true that he said it.

I have to say, the statement from the White House doesn’t fill me with confidence that he didn’t say it:

Well that is anything but a denial…

Whether you want to defend the comment or not, it’s just dumb to say such a thing so in-artfully and leave yourself open to charges of racism.
