Trump: This Isn’t About Guns, This Is About Mental Illness

On This Week, George Stephanopoulos, in a pre-recorded interview, asked Donald Trump about the events in Oregon and whether America needs stricter gun laws. Trump’s answer, while sure to spend the day causing controversy, was pretty much exactly right.

“This has taken place, whether it’s this type of crime or other crimes, taken place forever, since the beginning,” says Trump. “Even if you have a very tough system, you’re going to have people that slip through the cracks.”

His quotable moment was a terrific line:

“The gun laws have nothing to do with this. This isn’t guns. This is about, really, mental illness.”

This is a truth the hand-wringers just don’t want to hear. As Trump said, places like Chicago and Baltimore with very strict gun laws have the worst crime of all. It isn’t about gun laws. It’s simple logic.

Trump is right.
