Fox News is apparently trying to change with the times and in doing so they’ve created a new “Fox News Deck” that will lead the way in reporting breaking news. Shep explains below:

AP – Fox News Channel is eliminating one of Shepard Smith’s two daily newscasts and putting him in charge of a news team designed to quickly break in to other Fox shows when something big is happening.

Smith, the network’s top news anchor, signed a new multi-year contract, the network said Thursday. He will keep his 3 p.m. Eastern newscast while the 7 p.m. show is eliminated.

“We don’t have to wait ’til 7 anymore,” said Smith, named managing editor of the breaking news unit. “When it’s ready, we’ll put it on the air. When it’s breaking, I’m ready to do it.”

Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes described Smith’s new role as a quarterback able to call an audible when news is happening and get it on the air quickly. Except for Smith’s show and Bret Baier’s Washington report, Fox’s evening schedule is driven by opinionated, personality-driven programming.

Fox is building a new studio, calling it the “Fox News Deck,” for Smith to operate. The changes are likely to take place in October.

“This is the way news should be presented in today’s world with the equipment and the amount of technology that is available,” Ailes said. “We’re making a major investment in journalism here and it’s going to require journalists to be better.”

I know some of you probably dislike Shep Smith for his political views, but as a news anchor I think he’s one of the best. I’ve always liked him when he did straight news and I can see why Fox News values him so highly. He’s good at what he does.

As far as the primetime lineup, we’re still waiting to hear truth from rumor about Megyn Kelly and Sean Hannity. But it should be interesting.

Breaking news alert!!  Obama is giving a speech in five minutes.  Yawn.

  • stage9

I just don’t like this new “commentary-based” journalism. I really don’t care what the journalist’s opinion is on a story, just report the news, and I, as the viewer will provide my OWN commentary.

  • deTocqueville1

stage9 I’m with you on the ‘commentary’ stuff. I do not like anything about Smith but whatever he does, good for him.

  • Army_Pilot1967

Initially I liked ol’ Shep, but then several years ago he copped a liberal viewpoint and that did it for me.  Maybe I’m overly sensitive or whatever, but I no longer watch ol’ Shep.  Matter of fact I don’t watch much television news, period.  Were reporters ever just reporters, or have they always slanted things to the left or to the right?  Just curious.

  • The Sentinel

Sorry Scoop, I don’t share your affection for “Shep”. From my viewings, he’s messed up his lines more than other people have (often saying things in an awkward way – for instance, his famous “hand job” slip). And his politics and emphasis have always seemed at best to be moderately skewed. I don’t like his voice or his face… sorry.
    Frankly, good riddance to him.

  • Proudhispanicconservative

This is all happening to make room for Megyn Kelly, who in my view is the star on Fox. I would like to see O’ get the boot from his primetime slot at 8:00, which to me is just wasted space since I don’t watch him anymore.
    This is my lineup
    7:00pm TO 8:00pm HANNITY
    8:00pm  TO 10:00pm Megyn Kelly
    10:00pm TO 11:00pm  Greta
    12:00 AM BILL O’REILLY (SATURDAY)

  • E Lee Zimmerman

There is a God.  I’ve never cared for Shep.  I’ve dialed back watching Jell-O’Reilly, as well.  I’m taping Bret Baier so’s I can have some regular news juice, but I’ll probably start taping Miss Megyn’s slot.

  • E Lee Zimmerman

The Sentinel  Agreed.  Shep’s a Lib.  Can’t stand him OR his “deliver.”

  • odin147

Now the world has an incentive to not make any news

  • E Lee Zimmerman

stage9 I can tolerate modest commentary, but I agree that, when it gets layered on, it’s a waste of a good news story.

  • PhillyCon

Proudhispanicconservative Yeah, BOR should go the way of Geraldo.

  • Longiron

Proudhispanicconservative Megan Kelly is a very pretty news reader! She will not make it in Hannity slot@ 9PM EST. She will not ask the tough questions and will have plenty RINO/GOP on her program. Greta is the BEST ???

  • CO2isGood

Proudhispanicconservative The only way to improve on your schedule would be to get Mark Levine in there from 8pm to 9pm. Of course, he would need to take over Heraldo Rivera’s talk radio time slot first.

  • bhliberty

Longiron Proudhispanicconservative Greta gets my vote as well!  Kelly is good but Greta does ask questions in a way that gets to the heart of the issues without going on too much of the attack mode!
JMO, I think Greta should be at Hannity’s time slot!

  • bhliberty

The Sentinel  He’s funny as heck though when it comes to car chases in California!

  • Bill in Tennessee

Good, Shep is one of the more annoying hosts; I just  don’t dig his snarky, smarmy, snake-oil salesman delivery.  In a previous age he would be a barker at a traveling carney (if any of you know what THAT is).  So now maybe Fox will put something and someone in his place that it will be PLEASANT to watch while having a rushed dinner.

  • Proudhispanicconservative

I would love Levin in any slot, but as we know he doesnt like television, too many people to please and appease… He likes to have freedom and control over his shows.

  • Proudhispanicconservative

I also like Greta, she is better then I originally thought she was, I also like that she gives conservatives real time in her show.

  • PVG

Longiron Proudhispanicconservative Megan is a tougher interviewer than Hannity, who continually reverts to the same, worn out, talking points. Nice guy but cannot think on his feet. His constant parade of annoying libs and rinos is really tiresome.
I get all the important Fox info here………..thanks Scoop!

  • Amjean

Can’t wait to see/hear his lefty take on breaking news stories!!!!/sarc
Does anyone remember his coverage of the Katrina hurricane?  That was just horrible.

  • njmom

I’m not a Shep fan but I will pray all goes well with his shoulder. Was wondering what Roger was doing over at Fox so we’ll see soon how the evening schedule lines up? Don’t usually watch anymore but at 7PM I do like Lou Dobbs on Fox Business.

  • CalCoolidge

    Proudhispanicconservative
I think Pinhead and Kelly will be 8 and 9.  Greta and Sean at 7 and 10.

  • The Sentinel

    :)

  • Stehekin912

Somehow the News Deck sounds like KneeJerk News like MSNBC and the like do….not real news.
I wish Shep good luck.  Maybe he can make this kind of news responsible and not the gossip the other “news” places do.

  • nibblesyble

Shep is not my fav on Fox, but this does sound like a cool format and if he is just doing straight news then I am good!~

  • bluerose3335

Not RS we are not waiting about Hannity and Kelly…MAYBE YOU ARE..speak for yourself.  I could care less…Kelly is a BLOND KNOW IT ALL LIBERAL who thinks she is smarter than GOD…what a joke..She is average at best and WIL GET HER CLOCKED CLEANED no matter where she goes at night.  She is boring and quite frankly you will find the same in CNN and MSNBLOONEYC….So Ailes wants to lose viewers bring this LIBERAL BLOWHARD to the night.  As for Hannity he is too DULL and his POINT COUNTER POINT is OLD AND STALE….I could care less about hearing Liberals…HEY SEAN…CALL ABC, NBC, CBS, NYT, CNN and MSNBLOONEYC and ANYONE can hear the LIBERAL POINT OF GARBAGE!!  I stoppd watching FOX a couple years ago…it is Middle at best, boring 75 percent of the time and has become way too liberal.  Sorry could care less.  Hannity lost edge…I would rather listen to Levin or a REAL CONSERVATIVE on the radio…HANNITY IS A DRESSED UP WIMP always worrying about not offeniding that FAT SLOB AILES or his PUPPET MASTERS!

  • Bill589

A few years ago, when I watched FOX, Shep was snarky against the TPM and any politicians they supported – memorably Palin and Bachman. (Maybe a woman thing?)   He had no good reason to do this.
I can’t stand him since then.   Maybe he’s better now, but I wouldn’t know.

  • bluerose3335

Amjean Yes and was a first clas JERK….sitting in Judgemen of President Bush like that PUNK LITTLE LIBERAL HAD ALL THE ANSWERS….he is a CREEP and I cannot stand his SMOKER’S VOICE….Good Riddance to the little liberal napoleon….stay behind the scenes…only liberals will miss this jerk!

  • K-Bob

That’s actually smart move by Fox.  The ONLY reason I’ve tuned into them at all in the last four years has been when I saw something on the web (here, or at Drudge) that announced something major was happening, right now.

Unfortunately I’d tune into Fox, and they’d be still doing the talkover tango with two uninteresting “political consultants” and even the chirons at the bottom of the screen seemed to take hours to catch up.
Result: I stopped tuning in at all.

  • BrianJones1

Shep. is probably my most highly-respected Democrat…I actually ENJOY hearing his perspectives most of the time, because it gives me something else to consider when making my own decisions…and unlike most other Democrats, he actually ENCOURAGES YOU to form your own opinions (rather than just taking his word for it)…so Shep. deserves this new role, and I’m glad to see him getting it!

  • BrianJones1

Stehekin912 If any Democrat can make this new role work, it’ll be Shepard Smith…he’s CLEARLY left-leaning, but at least he doesn’t usually shove his views down your throat.  I think he’ll do good!

  • K-Bob

    Army_Pilot1967
The news has always been about control of the messaging and scandal-mongering.  Check out James T. Callender, serial muckraker during the Jefferson presidency.  He was responsible for the stories about Jefferson and Sally Hemings.

  • CalCoolidge

    E Lee Zimmerman stage9
Actually, what they choose to report and omit is a form of commentary.

  • Betsy Young

    I agree! Can’t stand him!

  • Betsy Young

I’m with ya Bill! However I tune in rarely to FoxNews! Watch only TheBlaze!!

  • Betsy Young

Agreed with all, except the Megyn Kelly part….cannot take her at all! Blech!

  • Betsy Young

    Puke!

  • kong1967

Betsy Young  Lol, no kidding.  The news alert would be the same as “turn the channel…NOW!”.

  • SheerPolitics

Yeah, he’s really good at breaking news of high speed chases or “bear alerts”…..

  • JIM737

Betsy Young  I agree too.  I stopped watching him after the katrina thing.  What a JERK!

  • Medaton

BrianJones1 Stehekin912 …at least he doesn’t usually shove his views down your throat.
Except when it comes to gays.

  • Medaton

Betsy Young That makes two of us!

  • spin43

I would never watch Sheppie boy, Billo, or Wallbanger. As a matter of fact, I don’t have a cable subscription. A very good way to save money while the government banks give you nearly 0% on your savings.

  • sdharms

Worst idea EVER! Shep is hysterical, given to hyperbole. So having him do breaking news will send us to the land of Katrina every day. I will never forget two of his “finer” moments — standing near the superdome in NO telling us someone needed to come help these people — when as we learned later, they could have all walked away from the Superdome after the storm. Also, he stood at Columbine HS several days after the shooting and started a report with “rumors are…” Good Grief!!!

    • ApplePie101

You obviously missed his minute-by-minute report on Balloon Boy…

  • cabensg

Shepard Smith. I don’t think so. Liberal hack, hacking.

  • 57thunderbird

I was hoping he was leaving Fox altogether. :-(

  • mike morrison

I can’t stand him…he’s a blabbermouth who speaks with a smirk and treats the audience like children. It’s news, not entertainment, Fox….report the news. Not everything is a “breaking story”. Cheese and Rice

  • Boobie_The_Rocket_Dog

I always thought he was FNC’s token gay.
