VIDEO: The Jewish roots of the Papacy – Why the disciples knew Jesus made Peter the Pope!

It’s time for something different. Good different. Awesome different, actually.

The other day I pulled up YouTube and it showed me a video called “The Jewish roots of the Papacy” – and I honestly thought it would bore my pants off. But I was incredibly wrong. It ended up blowing my mind.

It’s by Dr. Brant Pitre who is a Professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame Seminary. In it he explains the Jewish context to Matthew 16, when Jesus announced that Peter was the rock upon which He would build His church and then gave him the keys to the Kingdom. And once you understand it through Jewish eyes, you understand why all of the disciples knew that Jesus was making Peter the high priest, or Pope (that word comes along later).

It’s 55 minutes long but I assure you it’s worth watching. Even if you are protestant and reject the notion of the Papacy, you should still watch it because there is so much context to be learned that you can’t just get from reading the chapter itself.

You can always watch the first 15 minutes or so to get a feel for it. But like I said it’s mind blowing, so you’ll probably want to finish it once you start.

Watch:

There was a pamphlet that Pitre gave the audience that I was able to find for those of you who might want to follow along, or peruse this before you watch it to get an idea of what is to be discussed:

I would note that for those commenting, I don’t mind constructive conversation on whether you agree with this or not. I want there to be a dialogue about it, which is why I am posting it. I want people to hear this for themselves because, as you know already, I think it’s amazing.

But heed this warning: If you come here just to trash Catholicism or say horrible things about it, then you might as well keep it to yourself, because I will ban you and won’t think twice about it.

In short, be respectful.
