“What was he supposed to do, take a gun out and shoot Putin?” – Judge Jeanine Pirro

Jeanine Pirro was on with Fox and Friends this morning defending the president – even after his remarks yesterday.

When asked if Trump should have been tougher on Putin, Pirro asked “What was he supposed to do, take a gun out and shoot Putin?”

Watch:

I know that wasn’t a ‘grilling’, but I was glad to see Fox News anchors asking challenging questions of Pirro on this. Because I thought she was just over the top, to be honest.

First of all, nobody expects Trump to ‘shoot Putin’. We just want Trump to stand up to Putin firmly as he does our allies like Canada and those in NATO. We want Trump to, at the very least, stand by his own intelligence agencies assessment. Look Trump could have easily deferred to what he said last November in his presser yesterday, by answering that question “I’ve already made my position clear on this” and moved on. That would have done both what he wanted and what we wanted, to keep from arguing about it in front of Putin and he would have been standing with his intelligence agencies.

Secondly, Pirro’s response about WMD’s was crazy. As the Fox host pointed out, we’re talking about Trump’s own people. Fine, you do’t want to believe the tainted FBI? Then believe DNI Dan Coats and Former CIA Director Mike Pompeo, for example. Geez this is not hard. But Pirro makes it sound like none of them can be trusted because ‘spy games’ are going on everywhere and throws them under the bus too.

Look she’s probably right that Trump is taking this personally as a reflection on the legitimacy of his election. And I think Mooch is right when he says Trump is conflating the 2016 meddling and the Russian collusion investigation.

But Jeanine is far more cynical than she should be in order to defend Trump on this. I think Mooch’s comments this morning were much more reasonable and what Trump needs to hear. I just hope there’s a Mooch or two in his inner circle and they all aren’t just a bunch of Jeanine Pirros.

That said, it sounds like the Pirros are winning:

UPDATE:

Or maybe not. Trump just deleted his original Rand Paul tweet to take out the phrase “you really get it”. Is that a sign?
