White House new Obamacare tactic: “We’re talking about private insurance; this is not a government program”

Jay Carney is now pushing reporters to write that Obamacare is not a government program, but merely private insurance between you and your insurance company:

“As you know, and I think it’s very important and I look forward to everybody making this clear in their reports, we’re talking about private insurance. This is not a government program. The contract that you sign if you get health insurance through healthcare.gov or through a state marketplace is a private contract between you and an insurance company.”

If this is merely private insurance between me and my insurance company and not a government program, then why am I penalized by the government if I don’t sign up for it? You can’t have it both ways, Jay.

This “private insurance” argument was made yesterday by Sen. Angus King and it’s clear now that this is a concerted push by the White House in order to foist blame for this train wreck onto the private insurers and off of Democrats. Expect more and more Democrats to make this same argument with great frequency in the lead up to elections in 2014.
