WHOA: Crowdfunding site has raised over $225k in FOUR DAYS in support for Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson

Someone has created a page at GoFundMe to collect donations to help Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson cover his legal fees and has managed to raise over $225k in just four days. Here is what the site says:

This page has been created to support Officer Darren Wilson of the Ferguson Police Department.

We stand behind Officer Darren Wilson and his family during this trying time in their lives. All proceeds will be sent directly to Darren Wilson and his family for any financial needs they may have including legal fees.

Here’s a screenshot I just took moments ago showing the mega dollars they’ve raised in such a little amount of time:

There have been calls to take down the page, referencing racist comments made by some who are donating. GoFundMe says the page itself does not violate their terms and therefore it will remain up but they are policing the comments and removing any that are racist. Here is what they sent to Business Insider on this issue:

We asked GoFundMe about the requests to shut down the “Support Darren Wilson” campaign. Here is GoFundMe’s response, which a GoFundMe representative emailed us:

  • Much like Facebook and Twitter, GoFundMe is an open technology platform that allows for the exchange of ideas and opinions within the bounds of our terms of service.
  • In response to the high volume of recent inquiries, facts pertaining to the ‘Officer Darren Wilson’ fundraising campaign on GoFundMe are being shared below:
  • The campaign remains live at the following URL: http://www.gofundme.com/SupportOfficerWilson
  • The content of the campaign itself is not in violation of GoFundMe’s terms of service. However, some donors’ comments have contained content that is in violation of GoFundMe’s terms and have been removed accordingly.
  • The campaign does not appear in GoFundMe’s public search directory because a valid Facebook account has not been associated with it. More information about qualifying for GoFundMe’s public search directory can be found at the following URL: http://support.gofundme.com/entries/22591853-Where-is-my-page-

I’ll note that I just updated the Support Officer Wilson page and it’s over $226k now. It’s climbing fast.
