One officer dead, multiple injuries in shooting at Denver suburb… [Updated]

The Douglass County police are tweeting what sounds like a very bad incident in a suburb of Denver.

Details are sketchy, I’ll update as necessary…

Multiple deputies are down in Douglas County, prompting a shelter in place for residents near C-470 between University and Colorado.

Around 6 a.m., deputies responded to a shots fired call at 3404 E. County Line Road.

The sheriff’s office said in a tweet at 6:43 a.m. the scene is regarding an officer down in the area of County Line Road, near Colorado Boulevard between University Boulevard.

About an hour later, the agency tweeted an update that multiple deputies were down, but could not offer an update on their conditions.

Very scant details at this time.

A so far undisclosed number of Sheriff’s deputies were shot Sunday morning and a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team is at the scene, a home near the 3400 block of County Line Road, according to Lauren Lekander, DCSO spokeswoman.

“We have multiple officers down,” said Deputy Jason Blanchard of the incident in Highlands Ranch. “We are not giving numbers or status at this point, we are still working on getting the suspect in custody.”

Denver 7 reported hearing shots fired as a reporter arrived at the scene.

Deputies were responding to a disturbance call when shots were fired from the home near Colorado Boulevard shortly before 6 a.m., Lekander said.

“We have SWAT out there setting up and preparing to go in right now,” Lekander said at about 7:15 a.m.

Early this morning at approximately 5:13 AM, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance at the Copper Canyon Apartments, located on County Line Rd, between Colorado Blvd and University Blvd. During the investigation, shots were fired and multiple deputies were injured. At this time we do not have any further information on the status of the deputies involved. We do not have any information on civilian casualties at this time. The scene remains active please avoid the area.

A gunman opened fire on Douglas County sheriff’s deputies responding to a domestic violence call in a Highlands Ranch apartment complex early Sunday, killing one deputy and wounding four other deputies and two civilians. The shooter was shot and is believed dead, the sheriff’s office said at 9:32 a.m.

The body of the slain deputy was moved from Littleton Adventist Hospital in a black hearse, accompanied by dozens of law enforcement vehicles and motorcycles as it drove south on Broadway. Firefighters stood on their trucks along the procession route, and some residents stood on street corners with American flags.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle’s son, Jeff, is among the wounded deputies, according to the sheriff’s Facebook page.

Deputies were responding to a domestic-disturbance call when shots were fired from the home in the 3400 block of County Line Road near Colorado Boulevard before 6 a.m., said Lauren Lekander, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Steven Silknitter lives in the Copper Canyon Apartments complex, but was working elsewhere overnight when he heard about the shooting from his son. He called home, waking up his fiancee.

She woke to hear “a barrage” of gunfire in the dark, Silknitter said. “She was pretty scared. She kept saying how loud it was. … I told her to stay inside.”
