The Student Government Council at U.C. Irvine banned the American flag, along with others, from the common area of the student government offices because it didn’t foster an ‘inclusive’ atmosphere. They claimed that the American flag has been used in the name of colonialism and as a weapon for nationalism, and therefore they banned it.
However, after significant outrage, both on campus and nationally, the Student Government Executive Cabinet delivered a big fat VETO of the flag ban.
