Another red-letter day for journalism. Today some rando named Brian O’Malley retweeted a clearly doctored photo of Elise Stefanik flipping off the camera in Congress. So of course, George Conway, the husband of Kellyanne Conway, retweeted it.
Sharing a doctored photo of a Member of Congress just because you don’t like her politics is disgusting. @BrianJOMalley here is your garbage tweet verses the REAL photo. Shameful. pic.twitter.com/hZC9B6ZjvX— Calli Norton (@CalliNorton) November 16, 2019
Wow, George Conway was promoting what appears to have been a doctored image smearing Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik pic.twitter.com/CQ9xawq4f4— Ryan Saavedra (@RealSaavedra) November 16, 2019
He deleted, but now he’s making excuses for it:
And for you @gtconway3d - the one thing I’ve NEVER been called in my life is TRASH.— Elise Stefanik (@EliseStefanik) November 16, 2019
You need serious help. My opponent Taxin’ Tedra can have your sick mysogynist support.
If you did not take the photo yourself and cannot disclose the source or verify with her office, TAKE IT DOWN. https://t.co/TufvmDLZYm— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) November 16, 2019
Why is the fake photo of Stefanik damaging? Bc it's sort of believable in light of her somewhat obnoxious performance yesterday that drew massive backlash and generated fundraising for her opponent. I mean, I did a double take. It must be labeled as photoshopped or taken down.— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) November 16, 2019
I took down the picture after of Stefanik after someone pointed me to a graphic artist who had it on his timeline as an example of his "work." I won't defame him here.— Brian J. O'Malley (@BrianJOMalley) November 16, 2019
I take responsibility for it as it was my tweet. It looked real to me, because of a number of factors, (more)
And there you have it. They cry and whine when fake news is circulated on the right, but then make excuses when they do it. How hard is it to check to make sure something is real before you post it? Apparently it’s the toughest thing in the world because no one has time for it, certainly not on twitter anymore…
