The New York Times just published an opinion piece written anonymously by someone supposedly at the top of the Trump administration who is working to THWART Trump on some of his agenda items.
This is getting all kinds of response on Twitter. But first, here’s part of the article that leads with this caveat at the top:
The Times today is taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous Op-Ed essay. We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers. We invite you to submit a question about the essay or our vetting process here.
Here’s how the article begins:
President Trump is facing a test to his presidency unlike any faced by a modern American leader.
It’s not just that the special counsel looms large. Or that the country is bitterly divided over Mr. Trump’s leadership. Or even that his party might well lose the House to an opposition hellbent on his downfall.
The dilemma — which he does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.
I would know. I am one of them.
Whoever this person is, they suggest that they are only trying to thwart the non-Republican portions of Trump’s agenda:
That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.
The root of the problem is the president’s amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making.
Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people. At best, he has invoked these ideals in scripted settings. At worst, he has attacked them outright.
In addition to his mass-marketing of the notion that the press is the “enemy of the people,” President Trump’s impulses are generally anti-trade and anti-democratic.
Don’t get me wrong. There are bright spots that the near-ceaseless negative coverage of the administration fails to capture: effective deregulation, historic tax reform, a more robust military and more.
But these successes have come despite — not because of — the president’s leadership style, which is impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.
You can read the rest there if you want.
My first reaction to this is that we don’t even know if this person is legitimate. This could be a setup by people at the NY Times to create more chaos in the White House. I don’t know that this is likely, as the NY Times is putting all of their reputation at stake here. But just throwing it out there, as we’ve no idea who this person is. Personally, it sounds legit. But it could have been written to sound that way!
It would also seem that these deep staters aren’t very effective at their jobs of thwarting Trump. He’s gotten his way on trade and his leadership style is pretty much out there for everyone to see. So, great job…?
Lastly, I can’t help but think of just how hypocritical and irresponsible it is for the NY Times to publish this piece. The news media gave Obama a pass on nearly everything bad he did. Yet now they are trying to help the resistance sow chaos in the White House, two months before an election? They know that this is going to send the White House in to panic mode. That’s what it’s designed to do.
Twitter has some smart responses to this as well:
First, put a name on it and I'll read it. Second, thanks for validating everything Trump has said about conspiracies. This was a foolish move on the paper's part. https://t.co/3150VGWGCu

If you publish an "anonymous op-ed" from the resistance, people inclined to hate Trump will believe it. Those who support him will assume it's fake or from a low level gossip. It accomplishes nothing. If you want honor, put the name on it and have them live with the results.

Finally, when you wait to unleash something like this until weeks before an election, let's just say most of the country is going to turn a jaundiced eye, particularly coming from the Gray Lady.

RE: the NYT anonymous editorial. The federal government always has been honeycombed with officials resistant to this and all GOP administrations. They are government workers and nearly all Democrats. And don't be misled by the words "senior officials." There are loads of them.
— Brit Hume (@brithume) September 5, 2018
If this is true, is the goal of this op-ed to trigger a massive purge of those restraining Trump? Because that’s what will happen. Idiocy. https://t.co/v109YQanKW

This is quite a read a day after Woodward book drops -- an anonymous @NYTimes Op-Ed from a "senior Administration official" in the Trump administration https://t.co/ASHzYAqHrg

It’s time for Republican leaders on the Hill to stop encouraging a resistance against the people and the man they elected as president. This is the real scandal in a sea of media hysteria. https://t.co/LrHZt4ut8y

Okay Twitter - see how fast you can figure out which senior administration official wrote this https://t.co/kGWx0i1ocv

Also NYT anonymous op-ed: but not so much of a danger that I would go public https://t.co/rN8cvsz2GB
"Defending the institutions" = destroying the institutions https://t.co/c8ncSe0hdj

Not a fan of anonymous writings like this, but also-what was the point? To maintain an internal force of resistance? No. B/c the writer knows it will enrage Trump & he will want to fire those who seem to fit this mold. So is the goal to enrage him? https://t.co/8kTiLwr2KS

Yep, it sounds to me like this deep state resistance is failing so they’ve decided to try and drop a nuke on the Trump White House. And sadly, it will probably work.
