OH CRAP REPORT: Chinese Hackers have accessed US advanced weapon systems designs

I’m no military expert but this doesn’t sound good at all. Perhaps there are some things that simply should not be accessible via the internet. I understand the need for sharing and collaboration, but when China is able to hack in and potentially steal our most sensitive weapon system designs, we’re not doing something right:

WASHINGTON POST – Designs for many of the nation’s most sensitive advanced weapons systems have been compromised by Chinese hackers, according to a report prepared for the Pentagon and to officials from government and the defense industry.

Among more than two dozen major weapons systems whose designs were breached were programs critical to U.S. missile defenses and combat aircraft and ships, according to a previously undisclosed section of a confidential report prepared for Pentagon leaders by the Defense Science Board.

Experts warn that the electronic intrusions gave China access to advanced technology that could accelerate the development of its weapons systems and weaken the U.S. military advantage in a future conflict.

The Defense Science Board, a senior advisory group made up of government and civilian experts, did not accuse the Chinese of stealing the designs. But senior military and industry officials with knowledge of the breaches said the vast majority were part of a widening Chinese campaign of espionage against U.S. defense contractors and government agencies.

The significance and extent of the targets help explain why the Obama administration has escalated its warnings to the Chinese government to stop what Washington sees as rampant cybertheft.

In January, the advisory panel warned in the public version of its report that the Pentagon is unprepared to counter a full-scale cyber-conflict. The list of compromised weapons designs is contained in a confidential version, and it was provided to The Washington Post.

Some of the weapons form the backbone of the Pentagon’s regional missile defense for Asia, Europe and the Persian Gulf. The designs included those for the advanced Patriot missile system, known as PAC-3; an Army system for shooting down ballistic missiles, known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD; and the Navy’s Aegis ballistic-missile defense system.

Also identified in the report are vital combat aircraft and ships, including the F/A-18 fighter jet, the V-22 Osprey, the Black Hawk helicopter and the Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship, which is designed to patrol waters close to shore.

Also on the list is the most expensive weapons system ever built — the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which is on track to cost about $1.4 trillion. The 2007 hack of that project was reported previously.

China, which is pursuing a comprehensive long-term strategy to modernize its military, is investing in ways to overcome the U.S. military advantage — and cyber-espionage is seen as a key tool in that effort, the Pentagon noted this month in a report to Congress on China. For the first time, the Pentagon specifically named the Chinese government and military as the culprit behind intrusions into government and other computer systems.

  1. The Chinese have been buying, or at least accepting as payment US Govt bonds in return for their goods & services, which they sell to the USA.  They aint stoooopid, as they don’t really expect those bonds to ever be paid back.  So, they’re just getting some return on their investment.
Besides, maybe the obamessiah even gave them the “keys” so they’ll keep funding the USA welfare state.

  2. It’s not a “mistake”-  We owe them big time…..and sometimes you have to do things to postpone them dropping our currency….can’t have it happen during this administration.

  3. I wonder if The Bamster will do his best impression of Sgt Schultz again when he is asked about the SNAFU…after he comes back from his rendezvous with The Other Chrissy…on the Jersey Shore…

  4. Is there any surprise here ? The Chinese military seems to be coming out with equipment that looks like ours -DAAAH. Our leaders can’t keep their mouths shut with regard to strategy etc. everything is broadcast at some point – Israel would never allow this as a matter of protecting their country and people. We can learn a few lessons from them.

  5. Friends, as a retired IT pro, published in security, I tell ya… ANY system can be hacked.    That is why all forms of gun registration are a very BAD idea..  (grin)   It’s also why YOU need to start paying attention to the train YOU leave in cyber land.
CASH is king.   The price of security is convenience.
My last gig, the one that caused me to retire early was a bank security audit.   Friends… bad bad bad does not begin to define the state of technical affairs.   I had another pro (who makes me look like a beginner) check my work to ensure I was not overreacting..  I wasn’t..
BUT.. the real problem was not their current state but the SOFTWARE folk.  Flaws being inherent in their package who (after first denying it, then surrendering to truth) openly said  “Ok, you’re right, but we don’t care about that.”
WE  DON’T CARE…   A bank and the PRIMMER banking software company of the mid range systems industry..
I retired that day.   Much to my husbands surprise.    Shortly thereafter came 9/11.    I was not surprised.. mad yep.. surprised or shocked that this could happen.. no..
CASH is king.   The price of security is convenience…   Every plastic swipe you make leaves a trail like a snail that anyone with the will & the means can access.     Plastic might be convenient but for that convenience you give up privacy and security.     Is it worth it?
I go to the bank once a week.   Cash in hand I go about my business.   Never used an ATM in my life and never intend to (grin)..   (I hacked the banks ATM records as a demonstration.. (grin)..
Paying bills my mail might be convenient, but again…   you’ve opened a portal into your accounts.
BE WISE my friends.    Be careful.    Go though plastic withdraw..   Don’t trade your security for convenience.

  6. Barack Insane must be THRILLED to know that his communist friends are doing what he and his father dreamed about.

  7. It doesn’t help at all that Clinton gave them missile technology, and barack has agreed to deals with them.
The Pacific used to be an American pond.  Now, thanks to Clinton and barack, it’s a large, crowded kiddie pool filled with sharp toys and broken glass.

  8. In the United States sales industry we call this a boiler room sitting. But here in this sitting the big difference besides the obvious, is the change from using a phone to using a headset connected to a computer.

  9. Time for war is now then if they are going to be at par with us in a couple years because of their cleptomania. Don’t give them time to build the stuff.

  10. ” ……. but when China is able to hack in and potentially steal our most
sensitive weapon system designs, we’re not doing something right:”
I think it could also be said when you elect a total hate America Kenyan to occupy the White House, the same could be said!
So what can be done? Just like our electrical grid, theirs is vulnerable to EMP and likewise their computer technology is suseptable to worms and viruses now why doesn’t the US deploy some of that? Coward in the Oval Office.
America can kiss her butt goodbye when she put this hate America doofus anywhere but prison.

  12. Why does this surprise anybody? Stalin knew all about ‘The Manhattan Project’ before Truman did. If we and more kids in college getting ‘Information Services’ Degrees, than ‘Liberal Arts’ Degrees, we might actually have a chance in combating this.

    1. tinlizzieowner You took the words out of my keyboard!
With big companies getting visa for cheap Indian IT people to do the work our own people should do, and thus many bright young people not deeming it worthwhile to study IT because they know they won’t get a job, then this is what happens.
The times are over where governments can regard developing countries as only having masses of poor, uneducated people.

  13. Would it be safe to assume this is WHY our aircraft are crashing as of late, with our military on board?

  14. Well, stealing the plans, and being able to make them work, are two very different things.
    http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/27/zakaria-a-most-unintimidating-aircraft-carrier/
Look it up. Russia Today (RT) already had an article talking about how the Chinese are going to flood the world’s weapons market with cheap knockoffs. I’d like to see the dumbass that volunteers to fly the cheap Chinese knockoff of the F-35, which is a piss poor plane, as it is. I would not fire a Chinese rifle for fear of my life.

  15. Trust me, the Chinese don’t have to hack.  The Obama Regime is bursting at the seams with fellow travelers…

  16. Chinese are an example of what happens when a society has no moral foundation. If they worked one tenth as hard at inventing as they do stealing they wouldn’t be bottom of the food chain.

    1. And be aware they aren’t just stealing military secrets but patents and industrial secrets as well.

  17. LOLOL
    1) Either our gov.’t is deliberately making it possible for the Chinese to hack inot our military secrets
    OR
    2) Our gov.’t uses Windows Vista to protect our military secrets and hasn’t upgraded
How can no one can hack into Apple, Google, Oracle, etc. but the Chinese just continue to steal and steal our secrets through the internet…half-way around the world.
Sorry…this DOES NOT pass the smell test

    1. ArchAng3l Actually they cracked that nut during Clinton administration. I was watching a program on Military channel last night and they explained this.

  18. Well, since the PRC.has restricted our borrowing from them, this would be the perfect opportunity to enact fiscal discipline. Tell them we’re deducting the price of those systems from what we owe them, and heavily tariffwhat they send us. In the meantime, enact an economic stimulus of slashing taxes to domestic suppliers that step up to replace the PRC with superior products.
As for the PRC, engage in all out covert espionage and cyber warfare against them, while freezing out all nations that continue to buy from them from our marketplace with stiff tariffs. Also talk to them a lot less on the diplomatic scene, rendering it rare they even get to speak with our ambassador.
Oh, and any tactical systems they have are second rate, so we can’t use them, but if you want to hurt and aggrevate the PRC, share the stolen intel with RUSSIA through covert, back doors. Don’t even let Puddin even really know how he’s getting those secrets.

  19. By the way: the F-35 is a big POS. LET the PRC have it. It’ll destroy their military.

  21. why havent we hacked the crap out of China im sure we have the people to mess there stuff up

  23. Remember this?:

Obama surrounds himself with people like himself: unimpressive craptaculars that shouldn’t be running a Brownie Troop, much less any country in the world. How much money have we given Afghanistan’s evil, terrorist president? How much to Abbas? Egypt? How much on his VACATIONS? Money that would’ve been much better spent addressing these kindsof threats. This isn’t hindsight talking; anybody with half a brain has known about these threats for YEARS.
    Anybody, but Obama.
This should start another hearing by Issa, and impeachment should be in the air, along with special prosecutors and criminal indictments.

    1. VIRUSX2K1  Obama is more focused on social change, controlling the media and controlling us.  Foreign affairs and national security are distractions, set aside conflicts involving muslims…..where he sides with expanding Islamic power and influence.

      1. MAJOR KONG, that’s exactly why I think he should be looking at hostile deposition, indictment, prosecution and being sentenced to the ultimate taxpayer funded getaway:
        FEDERAL PRISON.

        1. VIRUSX2K1  I’m not sure how that works with Presidents.  I know we have to go through both Congress and the Senate to impeach him (which will never happen because Senate Dems are corrupt and will ignore all the crimes).  But what about charging him with crimes?  Does that have to go through Senate Democrats as well?  Can he be tried for crimes without getting the approval of the Senate?

        2. I don’t see anything in the Constitution that says we have to go through any special measures to criminally charge a politician. Unfortunately, they are allowed to remain in office during a criminal investigation, but that also does not stop the investigation. If a prosecutor decides to file charges, be it a conventional prosecutor or special prosecutor,

  25. Chinese “steal” plans to Austrialing INtellingence Center.
Its OK though says  Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr…”It’s got absolutely no implications for a strategic partnership,”

  26. Fo evwee capitalist seekwet you find, you weel get wun extra bowl – rice per week.

Like doesn’t China already own about 95% of America and hasn’t Obama given them all of our secrets so they won’t call our loans????

  27. In the name of collabortion, our administration has now agreed to give Russia access to our databases. It’s a little like putting a gun to your own head.

  28. Not that I don’t think this is an important issue, but it looks like the guys (at least the closest one) is playing a video game…

  29. More smoke and mirrors; either 1) the Chinese are
made to believe they stumbled onto something or 2) the administration continues
to push more distractions and diversions.

  30. “Perhaps there are some things that simply should not be accessible via the internet.”
This is the obvious solution. The internet will never be secure.

  31. This is BS. Does anyone believe the US State Media? They were given access.
The Chinese are still lending America the trillions we need to run government. America is $125 Trillion in the hole including our unfunded liabilities.
So, just exactly why would the Chinese continue to lend us money? Does anyone actually know the temrs of the bond program?
The Chinese are getting what they paid for – a little digital back door left open.

  32. At least with Clinton, we were paid to give them our top secret designs.  Now they just get stolen.  Ho Hum. Throw this topic in the same file as building a fence between us and Mexico.  Boring.

  33. This is bullshit.  There is no way those ‘plans’ were sitting out there for someone to take, and I can’t even imagine the full plans exist in any centralized space under any scenario.
This is Obama disinformation to propagate the ongoing ‘Chinese threat’ to try and take heat off of #IRS, #Benghazi, #AP.

  34. I’d like to think the administration cared about this but Obama is more concerned with his own power and his agenda to weaken the US.

  35. This makes me sick to my stomach. This is outrageous! The WH and the clown car Justice Department are worried about Rosen but this crap – which has been going on for years – goes on and on unchecked? All we get is a: “Whoops! They did it again report?” WTH?
America’s best weapon has been her people. Our brilliant minds have created some of the most cutting edge and military-changing weapon systems in the world. We’ve enjoyed a technological advantage for decades. But then we let these enemies gain access to our blood-bought secrets through shoddy security? Again, WTH?
There are plenty of doomsday novels out there by many authors who create stories about how America is taken out… and here we have reality happening right before our eyes… not fiction.
Once again, I sit here impotently pissing and moaning… but as a retired member of the armed services, I find this simply intolerable. Do you know how deadly this sort of loss is to our troops? Not to mention our sovereignty. I agree with Scoop… why even have it where these bastards can gain access to it? WTH? Obama and the morons at the top are blatantly incompetent, and Obama hates America… this much is true. If somebody doesn’t take immediate steps to stop this theft by an enemy of America and all enemies… then why even spend billions and trillions on self-defense? We’re aiding the enemy with our lax approach to securing our secrets. We’re allowing ourselves to be compromised.
Look up a report by McAfee on a Chinese incursion called “Night Dragon”. This is one of numerous examples where these Chinese SoBs are beating us without even firing one round. WTH!!!!

    1. The Sentinel I agree but until America can shed herself of self destructive mentality you can forget about doing any of it.
To answer another question regarding accessibility it’s because we owe them and the usurper says “here, we don’t need this anymore ’cause we’re all socialists now.”
