Ok, basically this race is too close to call. But instead of O’Donnell being down a fair amount of points, she is now at least neck and neck with Castle, if not slightly ahead – according to Public Policy Polling:
It looks like there’s a real possibility of a major upset in the Delaware Senate primary on Tuesday night, with insurgent conservative Christine O’Donnell leading longtime Congressman and Governor Mike Castle 47-44. That 3 point lead is well within the poll’s margin of error.
Tuesday night is primary night in Delaware, so we will know for sure in less than 48 hours (barring recounts and such) how this pans out. O’Donnell is still my candidate of choice even though I can’t vote in Delaware. I’ve recently heard other conservatives say that they think she is ‘insane’ for certain things that she has said. I think, rather, that every candidate has problems, and it matters which of those problems actually affect our lives. We know Mike Castle is a RINO at best, as he has supported both the Cap-N-Trade Act and the DISCLOSE Act. That affects me and you BIG time. On the other hand Christine O’Donnell has said that she had a majority vote in 3 counties that she did not and a few other things that I can’t recollect at this moment. But these specific problems don’t affect me and you at all.
I’m not saying O’Donnell is a perfect candidate or will be a perfect legislator, but we do know she professes a very conservative ideology, one that is not echoed in Mike Castle’s voting record. That’s the bottom line in this race. We know what Castle will do if he gets re-elected. O’Donnell is at worst a question mark. I’d prefer to have someone who is a blank slate that professes an ideology that stands with the Constitution rather than someone that we know will vote for a radical agenda.
At the end of the day, if we want to find people who will support and vote for ideas consistent with the Constitution, then we will likely have to vote for some very normal, common, and flawed people. Maybe they won’t be the best speakers. Maybe they have been foreclosed on before. Maybe they have once had to live in their car when they ran out of money.
But if they embody the principles and character like those who founded this great nation, then they are the people we want to elect. We want honest hard working people who love freedom and love the Constitution. We want people who understand what it is to fail and who will stand up for the freedom to fail. We want people who are compassionate, but not thieves. We want people who understand that America fights for freedom, not just for Americans, but for those who live under oppression who seek to be Americans. We want people who love this country and will fight for this nation to continue to be the greatest of all nations. And if one of these ‘normal people’ chooses to run for office against the ruling elite, then we owe it to the country and ourselves to get behind them and support them. Otherwise we will continue to be ruled by politicians who will use us for their own selfish gain.
As more people rise up from the tea parties, the 9/12 gatherings, or perhaps even from America’s back porch, we need to not dismiss them so quickly, but instead with appropriate scrutiny we should extend a hand of invitation for them to help lead our country back to its original principles that the founders had intended.
