Should government force cell companies to keep your text messages for 2 years?

Law enforcement in North Carolina would like for Congress to mandate that cell phone companies be required to keep your text messages on file for 2 years so that they can use them as evidence to help solve cases:

I can see why this would be helpful to law enforcement. Right now the only way for them to retrieve your text messages is to get them from your phone. If you’ve deleted them or your recipient deletes them, they are gone.

So what do you think?
