I mentioned on twitter this morning, with a little dismay, that McCotter said he was for the auto bailouts and I quickly got several responses suggesting that he is from Michigan and therefore he had little choice. But if that is true, wouldn’t that just make him a political opportunist?
I am dismayed by the fact that he supported the auto bailouts because they, like the stimulus, just covered up the real problems and kicked the can down the road for the car companies. In fact if you remember, GM had to eventually file bankruptcy after receiving a couple of bailouts from the government. There were many of us saying in December ’08 that they needed to file for bankruptcy, fix their problems, and that would be better than taking bailout money. But instead the government just threw money their way and 5 or 6 months later the government decided to force GM into bankruptcy as they took ownership. And of course GM still owes a ton of money to the taxpayers even though the Obama admin has tried to suggest they have paid it all back.
For the most part I think McCotter is a good conservative, but I must part ways with him on this issue:
