“Why wait until the end of May?” – John Bolton’s interesting take on Trump meeting with Kim Jong Un

John Bolton weighed in today with an interesting take on the upcoming meeting with Trump and Kim Jong Un, suggesting that all Jong Un really wants is to buy time for his nuclear weapons program.

Bolton explained that he doesn’t believe Jong Un actually thought Trump would take up his offer to meet face to face, that instead he’d get the usual response which would mean 6 months of diplomatic preparations and 9 months of talks.

But Trump foiled that plan by agreeing to meet with Jong Un in May, says Bolton, who then argues that based on that premise we should have the meeting at the end of March:

Why wait until the end of May? Let’s do this by the end of March because if Kim Jong Un isn’t really seriously prepared to talk about the logistics of denuclearization, I think it could be a very short meeting.

Bolton also explains that economic sanctions didn’t bring Kim Jong Un to this point. Rather, Jong Un realizes that unlike Obama, Trump isn’t afraid to use military force and thus he feels the need to distract the US so he can finish building his nuclear weapons.
