Angelina Jolie gives slightly veiled anti-Trump speech to the United Nations

So Angelina Jolie made a speech which made some pretty obvious references to Trump and others of his political ilk who are rising around the world. Specifically, she slammed “narrow nationalism” masquerading as patriotism.

While I might be obliterated in the comments for this, I don’t think she said much that would be necessarily antithetical to conservatism as it has been understood for decades. It definitely is opposed to the sort of populism that Trump espoused in the primary and the election, but it’s important to note that this is NOT how he’s governed. If anything, he’s some weird combination of conservatism and populism that is being worked out every day.

A nuanced understanding of the world and human nature will accommodate Jolie’s criticism and traditional conservatism, even though we might disagree about the implementation of the principles she’s talking about. At least she’s talking about principles as if they matter….
