Two churches seemed to be the target of a bomb attack where no one was hurt. It was during the services and went off in a mailbox outside.
Las Cruces police are investigating explosions that happened near two churches on Sunday morning.
Las Cruces police spokesperson Sgt. Robert Gutierrez said a mailbox exploded on the 1800 block of Locust Street, at Calvary Baptist Church.
“Right now, there’s just a lot of paper shreds,” said Las Cruces police spokesperson Sgt. Robert Gutierrez. “We’re thinking someone put a lot of fireworks together.”
The call came into central dispatch at 8:19 a.m.
At 8:41 a.m., a call came into central dispatch regarding a similar explosion on Miranda Street, near Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Both churches had services scheduled at the time and had people inside. Churchgoers were evacuated and told to leave their cars behind at the scene.
“It was a real bomb, I saw all the parts,” said Cavalry Baptist member Dennis Llewellyn, who said he was outside the church when the explosive went off. Llewellyn said he was a former special forces member with the Marines and recognized the bomb parts that included an Everready battery. He and fellow church member, Mike Stewart, kept churchgoers arriving for the 8:30 a.m. service from going into the building during the five to 10 minutes it took for police to arrive. Stewart was the one to notice the debris and damaged mailbox, the two men said.

It sounds like it was more of a prank than anything, but if these were black churches, you can bet Al Sharpton would have already ran to Texas and blamed Rush Limbaugh, Donald Trump and Calvin Coolidge for the “climate of hate” that inspired the terror.
