A group of President Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters in the House of Representatives have sent a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, formally nominating the President for a Nobel Peace Prize.
The nomination was spearheaded by Indiana’s Rep. Luke Messer, who is locked in a fierce GOP primary battle in the Hoosier State for a Senate seat.
In the letter, Messer and his Republican colleagues endorse Trump’s nomination by arguing that he deserves the award because of his work to end the Korean War and bring peace to the peninsula.
“Since taking office, President Trump has worked tirelessly to apply maximum pressure on North Korea to end its illicit weapons program and bring peace to the region,” the letter reads.
Joining Messer in the letter are conservative members like Freedom Caucus leader Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Rep. Steve King of Iowa.
This is all fine and good. As many many many people have said on Twitter, if Obama got the peace prize for just being black, then surely Trump should get it for… uhm agreeing to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, after we all pretended that we were angry at Obama for saying he’d meet with him with no preconditions. Sure. On the other hand, Jonah Goldberg points out that it’s a little hypocritical to say that Obama didn’t deserve the prize, and then use that as a basis to argue that Trump does. But no one cares what Goldberg thinks because #MAGA!!!
I will say that IF Trump is able to actually get the Norks to denuclearize without giving up too much, and secure a verifiable and reliable peace in the region then he will *absolutely* deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. That’s still a big if.
Little known secret: nearly anyone can be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Still, he’s on his way!! They should just rename the damn thing the #MAGA Peace Prize already!!!
