El Paso VA on lockdown after ‘active shooter’ report; UPDATE: Doctor shot, shooter killed himself

An “active shooter” incident is being reported at the VA in El Paso, Texas.

CNN has a few bare facts:

There is an active shooter at the El Paso VA Health Care System in El Paso, Texas, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The area is on lockdown, said Clarence Davis, spokesman for the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, which is adjacent to the VA facility.

And from the Associated Press:

EL PASO, Texas — The Army is searching for a suspect after an “active shooter” was reported at a Texas military hospital.

 Fort Bliss spokesman Gil Telles says an “active shooter” has been confirmed at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. Telles says he has no information on casualties or arrests. However, the entire hospital complex and its adjacent veterans’ hospital have been placed on lockdown.

The incident was reported shortly before 4 p.m. local time Tuesday.

UPDATE:

A doctor at the El Paso VA Health Care System was shot today and the shooter apparently shot and killed himself, officials said a preliminary investigation shows.

The office of U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-El Paso, said the information is preliminary and the investigation is continuing.

The shooting was reported about 4 p.m.

Police blocked off several streets near the veterans facility, 5001 N. Piedras, and helicopters patrolled from above.

The shooting was initially reported at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center but officials said there was no shooting there.
