There are reports of an explosion going off in Ansbach, Germany, and the mayor has now confirmed that it was intentional from an explosive device:

Hermann has said that the dead man was denied asylum but was allowed to remain in Germany because of the “situation in Syria”.

The suspect had twice previously “tried to commit suicide” and had then been in psychiatric care in the district hospital in Ansbach, the officials said.

The contents of the backpack could have killed many more people, Hermann said.

The material used to make the bomb came from metal items used in “wood manufacturing”, Janek reports Hermann as saying.

Hermann did not specify whether these were nails or screws or some other item.

Police in the southern German city of Ansbach say a man was killed when an explosive device he was believed to be carrying went off near an open-air music festival, injuring 10 people.

Ansbach police said in a statement early Monday that just after 10 p.m. Sunday they were alerted to an explosion in the city center.

They said that “a man, according to our current knowledge the perpetrator, died” in the blast.

Ansbach police could not immediately be reached for further comment.

German police say one person has been killed and another 11 injured in an explosion at a cafe in the Bavarian city of Ansbach.

Police told the dpa news agency early Monday that it wasn’t clear what caused the late Sunday night blast in the city near Nuermberg.

Ansbach police could not immediately be reached for comment but Germany’s top-selling Bild newspaper said it was believed to have been a gas explosion.

Dpa reports that an open-air concert nearby with some 2,500 in attendance was shut down as a precaution after the explosion.

The man who was killed by the explosion initially survived the blast but later succumbed to his wounds, a police spokesperson cited by weekly German news magazine, Focus. His injuries were consistent with the close detonation of an unknown explosive device, leading authorities to believe that he was the perpetrator.

Following the explosion, some 350 servicemen from the fire and rescue services arrived at the scene.

At least 12 people were injured in the explosion, with three people suffering “serious” injuries, a police spokeswoman said.
