It passed the House 277-148. The estate tax amendment that would have hurt the job producers even more than in the compromise package was not adopted and therefore the bill now goes to the President’s desk to sign.
So that’s how it ends.
UPDATE: I see a lot of discussion around my use of the words ‘job producers’ in reference to the estate tax. Besides the fact that it’s completely unfair, if the owner of a farm dies and those who inherit the farm can’t pay the high tax, then they may have to sell it and they lose their business. Perhaps it’s more indirect, but I believe it does have an effect on job creation, especially when you keep lowering the bar on who’s estates are affected.
