Chris Wallace, to Michele Bachmann: “Are you a flake?”

Yes, he actually asked her that.

Wallace prefaced his question by citing two fairly weak examples of Bachmann’s “gaffes.” He pointed out that in the past Bachmann has suggested that there may be some anti-American members in Congress. I’m not sure that’s even a debatable point, let alone a gaffe. As for Bachmann’s claim last month that up to 30,000 civilians may have been killed by NATO air strikes in Libya, if you watch that clip you will see that she clearly was not citing that figure as gospel – nor was she referring to a single air strike (despite reports to the contrary).

But the point isn’t whether Bachmann is, in fact, prone to gaffes or misstatements. Even if she was a true buffoon, for an interviewer to refer to her as a flake is unprofessional, and insulting – as Bachmann states in her excellent response.

I expect much better from Chris Wallace. This is not one of his finer moments.
